Communications and Digital Director

The Dem-NPL is seeking an individual with experience and skill in crafting, integrating, and disseminating an effective messaging strategy, and someone who can help reshape and elevate the brand of the Dem-NPL in this cycle and beyond. 

The Communications and Digital Director will work closely with the Executive Director, Chair, legislators, and candidates to craft the party’s message for the 2021 Legislative Session and the 2022 cycle. The Communications and Digital Director will report directly to the Executive Director. The Communications and Digital Director will be responsible for:

  • Working with the Executive Director, Chair, and stakeholders to develop a communications plan, strategy, and overall message for the party for the 2022 election cycle
  • Working with statewide candidates and the House and Senate caucuses to develop the communications plan and coordinate with them make sure that their campaign message aligns with the party’s
  • Collaborating with candidates and campaigns up and down the ticket to execute their campaign messages and communications strategy. This includes, but is not limited to: issues booklet, opposition research, media training, and coordinating earned media
  • Overseeing media training for the Chair, Vice-Chair, and candidates
  • Serving as the spokesperson for the party
  • Writing and disseminating press releases, media advisories, statements from the Chair, and other outreach materials
  • Managing the release of a weekly party newsletter
  • Developing and executing an integrated digital campaign plan for the Democratic-NPL, including list building, social media, and web properties
  • Generating and enhancing earned media and communications resources by networking with media throughout the state
  • Creating a cohesive statewide message by writing, editing, designing, and curating content for the party’s social media accounts and the social media accounts of our local affiliates
  • Managing a robust social media program which integrates our message and tracks progress and effectiveness of our effort
  • Producing social media graphics and videos to elevate the party’s social media brand and messaging

Requirements:

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proven experience managing multiple complex projects and finishing tasks on time
  • Experience with digital organizing and online fundraising
  • Experience in graphic design, social media management, and strategic communications
  • Basic videography and photography skills
  • Willing to relocate to North Dakota upon hire
  • At least 2 years of communications and/or digital experience, ideally in the political field

Preferences:

  • Experience with InDesign or other desktop publishing software
  • Experience with Facebook Business Suite
  • Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and WordPress
  • Experience with NGP and other political fundraising and database software

Native American Outreach Director

 

The North Dakota Democratic-NPL Party (“Dem-NPL”) is seeking a passionate, personable individual for the position of Native American Outreach Director. This person will work directly with the Executive Director and party leadership to implement a strategic tribal outreach plan. 

 

The Native American Outreach Director will be responsible for overseeing tribal specific outreach and activity. The position is expected to cultivate and maintain relationships with all recognized North Dakota tribes and tribal leaders to expand the Dem-NPL’s ability to recruit candidates, expand voter education and awareness initiatives, and ultimately increase turnout among Native American voters in the state. 

 

Position Summary and Responsibilities:

  • Work with the state and local party leadership and senior party staff to write and implement ongoing political outreach plans to raise awareness of Democratic candidates and values in Native American communities within North Dakota
  • Serve as the unofficial ambassador between the Dem-NPL and tribal leadership
  • Plan and recruit for small and large tribal outreach events on behalf of the Dem-NPL 
  • Hire, manage, and coach tribal organizing staff
  • Recruit and manage volunteer teams to complete outreach goals and build relationships
  • Create effective materials and organizing tools to use in tribal communities and urban Native American populations 
  • Work with tribes and tribal leaders to build a tribal voter database and system for efficient outreach and engagement
  • Ensure the engagement of the federally recognized sovereign Native American governments, their leaders, members, and broader urban tribal communities with the state and local party, legislators, and other party stakeholders, and with state, local, and national politics 
  • Prepare briefings, communications, and collateral material to support meaningful engagement with Native American and tribal communities on behalf of the Dem-NPL
  • Work with individual campaigns and the legislative caucuses to plan and execute tribal and Native American engagement efforts 
  • Work with the Dem-NPL Native American Caucus to devise an electoral outreach program, or to support an existing state-based electoral program that builds Native American representation and power in North Dakota communities
  • Organize coalition meetings, conference calls, and trainings that build representation and power for Native American and tribal leaders

 

Minimum requirements and skills include: 

  • Two to three years of related political experience with a tribal communities, state or national committees, political campaigns, or non-profit organizations
  • Have a clear understanding of North Dakota tribal/state political landscape 
  • Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, and presentation skills 
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, and strong attention to detail 
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment where priorities change rapidly
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership development, electoral campaign management, staff management, and/or tribal policy
  • Confidence in building and maintaining relationships with tribal government officials

  • Experience with standard political organizing tools, software, and apps is preferred
