Dem-NPL Leadership to host Press Conference following State of the State

BISMARCK — Democratic-NPL Legislative Leadership will host a press conference in the Press Room at the ND Capitol following the State of the State.
WHO: Democratic-NPL Legislative Leadership
WHAT: Dem-NPL Legislative Leadership will outline their priorities to fight for North Dakota families this Special Session.
WHERE: Press Room, ND Capitol Building, 600 E Boulevard Ave, Bismarck
WHEN: Wednesday, September 2, 2026, 10:30 AM or following the State of the State.
WHY: This morning, Republican lawmakers in both the House and the Senate blocked bills that would help North Dakota families with child care and a pause on new data center development. With the North Dakota Legislative Assembly meeting for its second special session in just 9 months, lawmakers must use this time to prioritize issues urgently important to North Dakotans, including vital child care funding and making sure citizens’ voices are heard as the state decides whether to develop more AI data centers. If all this special session accomplishes is additional controlled substance regulation and cleaning up another instance of the GOP’s mismanagement of state government, it will have been a wasted opportunity to address the issues most important to North Dakotans right now. North Dakotans are raising real concerns about child care costs and availability and about the pace and long-term impacts of data center development, and Republican lawmakers are not even allowing the Legislature to have the debate.
Democratic-NPL Proposals:
Child Care Assistance – LC 25.1426.02000
Provides a $9 million appropriation to HHS for Child Care Assistance Program grants. The proposal responds to the continuing child care affordability and availability problem and the CCAP wait list.
Data Center Moratorium – LC 25.1452.01000
Creates a temporary moratorium on local authorization or permitting for construction or expansion of data centers. The moratorium would take effect immediately and expire June 30, 2027. Because both proposals were already prepared by Legislative Council and presented to Legislative Management, the drafting work is complete and both have LC numbers.
