Letter: New leadership needed to restore balance

North Dakota is sitting on nearly $29 billion in public trust funds—wealth that belongs entirely to the citizens of this state. Yet, under the current Republican legislative supermajority, our public resources have been weaponized into a double standard. The state creatively acts as a venture capitalist for well-connected insiders—bankrolling private data centers, underwriting corporate pipelines, endowments to build presidential libraries where more buffalo roam than people, and cutting multi-million-dollar checks for Hollywood celebrities—while forcing local voting taxpayers to hike their own property taxes just to fix crumbling neighborhood schools. This isn't fiscal conservatism; it is a failure of leadership that treats corporations as investments and our children as liabilities.

Josh Boschee joins Joel in the KFGO studio after being elected mayor of Fargo

State Sen. Josh Boschee declared victory Tuesday night in a crowded five-way race to become Fargo’s next mayor, as voters also shook up the city commission and overwhelmingly approved an infrastructure tax extension.

Boschee, a Democrat-NPL lawmaker representing Fargo’s District 44, secured nearly 47% of the vote. He comfortably outpaced his closest challenger, City Commissioner Michelle Turnberg, who finished second with 27% of the ballots cast.

Letter: Don't preach about fiscal responsibility and then support Trump's vanity projects

How much of the defunding of Medicaid could be restored if these projects were defunded and vigorously objected to? There is quite a contrast in the values of the president's vanity projects and values that save lives and reduce poverty.

Fargo mayor-elect Josh Boschee on housing, downtown, and a changing North Dakota

Fifty-four percent of Fargo are people who rent their home, and there's a lot of people who want to continue to rent their home. They don't have an interest in buying their home — that's certainly something I’ve heard loud and clear throughout the campaign. But their concern is wanting to make sure they have safe housing. While their rent continues to go up, or new fees get added to their monthly bill, they're not seeing that security door getting fixed or the mold that they've addressed with their property manager be addressed.

And so, part of one of the first things I'm going to do is create a Mayor's Council on Renters, and we're going to bring property managers, landlords, renters together and we're going to talk about -- what is the bar is what we consider safe housing in Fargo? And establish that bar, because there's a lot of great landlords and property managers already doing that work, but we want to make sure that they hear from tenants to hear those concerns. And we’re raising that bar so that everyone can have some safe housing.

After Raising Healthcare Costs, Trump Wants Americans to Take Out Loans for Medical Bills

“Donald Trump and Republicans raised healthcare costs for tens of millions of Americans – and now his administration is suggesting that Americans should take out loans for medical bills they can’t pay. In Trump’s economy, working families are already struggling to make ends meet as prices skyrocket. Americans are being forced to decide whether to pay their medical bills or put food on the table. Americans shouldn’t be taking on even more medical debt just because Trump wanted to hand out tax cuts to his rich and powerful friends.”

Before the Outbreak, Rollins Warned Screwworm Would Be “Devastating” and a “Threat To Our Homeland”

The agricultural economy is already in turmoil. Trump’s unhinged trade war locked farmers out of their markets, causing family farms to go bankrupt at the fastest pace in five years in 2025, alongside record-high farm debt. Now, Trump’s deadly and costly war with Iran is driving up the costs of diesel and fertilizer. In a survey of more than 5,700 farmers, 70% of farmers said they will not be able to buy the fertilizer they need because it is too expensive, and 94% of respondents said their financial situation has worsened or remained the same since last year.

Inflation rises to a 3-year high on spiking gas prices, highlighting affordability challenges

Inflation had been cooling before President Donald Trump imposed sweeping tariffs in April 2025, which lifted the costs of many goods. Prices have since surged after the Iran war made oil and gas more expensive, making affordability a key political issue. A key question is whether rising prices will spread more broadly through the economy.
