What is a Farmer's Life Worth?
I am organizing roundtable discussions on rural mental health and suicide prevention, and I invite every North Dakota candidate to join me. This is not a Red or Blue Team issue. This is a human issue. As long as someone is breathing, there is hope. Once they stop, it's too late.
Let's bring farmers, faith leaders, agriculture organizations, and healthcare professionals together to share agriculture-specific mental health resources and figure out a solution. One conversation at a time. If the first roundtable is meaningful, I'll organize more. To be part of this effort, call me at 701-400-6767.

Addressing male suicide takes individual, community engagement
Nationwide, farmers have a rate of suicide 3.5 times higher and veterans have a 58% higher risk than the general population.
In North Dakota, the number hovers around 10-15 farmer suicides per year, according to Markegard. Data from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs shows an average of 20 veteran suicides annually in the state.
Around 80% of suicides in North Dakota are men, with some of the highest rates compared to overall population in rural counties. In 2023, veterans accounted for a little over 13% of the 146 suicides in the state.

Fargo specialist warns of growing AI misinformation risks
One AI chatbot wasn't able to tell for sure if the image was real or fake, another said the picture was almost certainly AI-generated, and the third said it was more likely to be a real photo.
Even Carney said telling the difference is becoming nearly impossible, and way more difficult than even six months ago.
His main piece of advice is to slow down and verify what you're seeing before you react.

North Dakota officials say data center concerns fueled by misinformation
Local opponents of data center projects have cited a wide ranging list of concerns. These have included noise and light pollution in rural areas, disruptions to wildlife and hunting, water use and health concerns. The concerns aren’t limited to the communities hosting the facilities either as some worry the data centers’ demand for power will drive up residential electric rates as well.

Democrats seek AG opinion on candidacy of North Dakota lawmaker who died in plane crash
A letter dated Tuesday signed by Minority Leader Zac Ista of Grand Forks and Sen. Tim Mathern and Rep. Gretchen Dobervich of District 11 requests an opinion on the candidate eligibility questions:
Can a deceased primary election candidate who cannot be removed from the primary election ballot but receives enough votes to advance to the general election, be deemed nominated? If so, how is the vacancy on the general election ballot filled?

Senate passes $70B bill to fund immigration enforcement, without limits on Trump ‘anti-weaponization’ fund
“Donald Trump is once again showing where his priorities are. Working families are cutting back on spending and dipping into their savings to make ends meet, and what is Trump doing? Spending taxpayer dollars to coat statues in gold. In Trump’s mind, there’s room in the budget for his wars, tax cuts, and vanity projects, but not healthcare, food assistance, or daycare for working families.”

Texas Republicans Have a Data Center Problem
According to a Texas Tribune analysis, at least 82 data centers, or nearly 60% of those that are either planned or under construction, are in state House districts that voted for President Donald Trump and elected a Republican state representative in 2024. Meanwhile, a March Quinnipiac poll found that 65% of Americans oppose the building of an AI data center in their community.
Republican state lawmakers — caught in the middle — have offered mixed opinions about data center development amid calls from city and county leaders to give them more freedom to regulate the facilities.
Altogether, the thorny politics could hurt Republicans ahead of this year’s midterm elections — especially in a cycle when they hold the White House, a dynamic that typically favors the opposing party.

Telehealth access to abortion pill is lifesaving for domestic violence survivors, some say
Researchers, advocates and survivors of domestic violence say it’s vital to keep telehealth access available for people in abusive relationships who need discreet abortion options. The Louisiana lawsuit, however, argues in part that mifepristone has been weaponized against pregnant women in abusive relationships and shouldn’t be available by telehealth.

U.S. Passes 2,000 Measles Cases in 2026 Under Trump and RFK Jr.’s Leadership
“Donald Trump and RFK Jr.’s assault on Americans’ health and safety has caused outbreaks of preventable diseases and dysfunction in our public health system, and left Americans vulnerable to serious illnesses. Now, even more deadly global outbreaks are emerging, and because of RFK Jr., the U.S. remains without critical leadership and resources at health agencies that are crucial to keeping Americans safe from these diseases. Trump and RFK Jr. promised to ‘Make America Healthy Again,’ but instead they have put children and families in harm’s way.”

Republicans' sweeping election overhaul fails in the Senate
The SAVE America Act, a far-reaching Republican election overhaul that President Trump said should be his congressional allies' top priority, has officially failed in the Senate.
The measure was voted on Thursday as an amendment as part of lengthy debate over an immigration funding package. The election bill has languished in the Senate for months, after the House passed a version in February on a near party-line vote.
