North Dakota sees dip in General Fund revenue; lawmakers still anticipate surplus for biennium
North Dakota's General Fund revenue is tracking below forecast for the first time in the 2025-27 biennium, according to state Office of Management and Budget Director Joe Morrisette.
|
Morrisette on Wednesday gave a presentation on the state's finances to the Legislature's Budget Section, the committee responsible for monitoring the state's funds during the interim between legislative sessions.

Guest column: Review the data and make your own judgment
|
Accordingly, the responsibility for the survey, its results, and limitations are the appointed members of the commission, not an employee who acts on the commission's instructions. The text of the opinion piece appropriately criticized the commission, but the accompanying photo invites readers to come to a different conclusion.
|
|
Criticizing the actions of a governmental body and calling public officials to account is a core function of an independent media. It is not fair, however, to use criticisms about survey methodology or results as a vehicle to malign an employee who is acting on the instructions of others.
|
The Ethics Commission's constitutional charge is to strengthen North Dakota citizens' confidence in state government. I look forward to continuing to serve on this commission to that end and am proud to be associated with my fellow members and the commission's employees.

North Dakota Supreme Court tosses ballot measure, finding term limits proposal unconstitutional
The North Dakota Supreme Court on Thursday found a term limits ballot measure advanced by state lawmakers to be unconstitutional and directed the secretary of state to not place it on the November ballot.
|
Legislators in 2025 adopted Senate Resolution 4008, which aimed to ask voters whether to amend lawmaker term limits they approved in 2022.

Letter: Regulations aren't the problem
We all know the cause of this was an illegal war which caused disruption of shipping. Goehring does not mention that. Instead, he goes into rambling about regulations. I have been farming for 50 years. I have experienced low commodity prices, high costs, drought and hail storms. I have dealt with regulations that were a pain, but no regulation has ever threatened the financial viability of my farm.
|
When we discuss the current farm situation, lets confront the real problems which are war, tariffs, and trashing America’s relationship with allies and trading partners.

Planning for a nuclear future
North Dakota continues to explore opportunities in emerging energy technologies, including advanced nuclear power.
|
This week on A Closer Look with the Monitor, reporter Jacob Orledge talks to host Craig Blumenshine about why state officials recently highlighted the Missouri River as the state’s best source of water for potential nuclear energy projects.
|
Orledge also discusses his new reporting about turnover on the Ethics Commission and the results of an informal survey on ethics in government distributed by the commission.

DNC Launches Nationwide Stuff Costs Too Much Weekend of Action With More Than 200 On-The-Ground Events Taking Place in Communities Throughout the Country
|
“From groceries and gas to healthcare, childcare, rent, and utilities, everything costs too damn much under Donald Trump and the Republicans. And to stop these skyrocketing prices that are crushing working families, we have to stop the Republicans in November. That’s why Democrats are launching this nationwide weekend of action to reach, engage, register, and mobilize voters who will make the difference in races up and down the ballot. By organizing early and organizing everywhere, Democrats will win these midterms and get to work making life more affordable.”

Michigan House Democrats pitch transparency, community benefit requirements for data centers
The package also includes a ban on nondisclosure agreements between developers and local officials when tax incentives are on the table, project labor agreement requirements and plans for a decommissioning fund communities can use to restore a data center site if the project fails.
|
Rep. Joey Andrews (D-St. Joseph) told reporters three additional bills are also in the works. One of these bills would require data centers to meet energy efficiency requirements, while another would require regular reporting on data center water and energy use. The third would create energy rate requirements, which Andrews said would make sure the state meets its goal of 100% clean energy by 2040 and that data centers are not bringing more fossil fuel resources online.

Here’s what communities can do when data centers arrive
Many residents who oppose data centers cite a lack of transparency as a main reason for their opposition. For local and state governments to plan for future data center development, it is important to provide as much information as possible about what the development would entail.

Big Tech Just Got a Brutal Reality Check
AI is everywhere now: in search, email, workplaces, customer service, politics, policing, and the endless slop machine we still apparently call the internet. But the more people are forced to use it, the less they seem to trust it. This video looks at the widening gap between AI adoption and public confidence, from Pew’s new polling on American distrust, to Microsoft’s Copilot backlash, Meta’s unwanted AI search, Google’s glue-pizza hallucinations, AI-generated software slop, political spending by AI-linked PACs, and surveillance systems being abused by police.

US Supreme Court hands win to Monsanto in case related to claims Roundup causes cancer
“In sum, federal law requires Monsanto to sell Roundup with the label that EPA approved at the initial registration and that EPA has subsequently re-approved on multiple occasions—that is, the label without a cancer warning,” he wrote.
|
“Durnell’s state tort claim, by contrast, would require Monsanto to add a cancer warning to its labels. That Missouri-law requirement is ‘in addition to’ and ‘different from’ Monsanto’s federal-law labeling obligations.”

IN THE STATES: Trump’s Refusal To Bring Down Housing Costs Continues To Hurt American Families
A reminder: Since Trump retook office, he has made life unaffordable for millions of Americans. Nearly 8 in 10 voters say that the cost of housing is extremely or very important, and nearly 90% of voters believe that buying a home is harder than ever before. Under Trump, inflation is soaring to the highest level in years, with American families spending $622 more on housing costs such as rent and mortgage due to Republicans’ reckless economic agenda and war of choice in Iran.
