North Dakota energy research center cuts affect 40 staff
|
Representatives from UND and North Dakota State University last year told legislators that Trump administration efforts to curb federal spending had already cost the state millions in research funding, with more losses expected.
|
A recent post on the EERC website about its history says, “We still embrace an all-of-the-above energy approach, advancing research across coal, oil, natural gas, biomass, carbon capture, and emerging technologies.”

Port: Sons of Liberty founder charged with felony terrorizing
Gohrick is the chairman of the North Dakota Republican Party's District 2 committee and made statewide headlines recently when he backed a resolution at the party's state convention to strip the party affiliation away from the incumbents who had boycotted the convention over dissatisfaction with the party's current leadership. Gohrick had also proposed a party rule that would have fined Republicans as much as $100,000 for disobeying the party's platform.
|
His arrest has set off accusations of a conspiracy from at least one Republican legislative candidate. Sharlet Mohr, who is running for Republican nomination for state House in Williston-area District 23, suggested that his arrest, which she described as a dispute Gohrick had with another person while a firearm was on the dashboard of his car, was politically motivated.

Rural America will Decide the Senate
This week Heidi and Joel welcome journalist Scott MacFarlane to The Hot Dish. Scott spills the tea on courts, campaigns, and deer sausage. If you’re into political intrigue, judicial juiciness, and rural rallying cries, you won't want to miss this week's conversation.
|
Most of us think courts and politics are dull as dishwater, until you realize they're the hidden game changers in who controls your future. In this eye-opening episode, seasoned journalist Scott McFarland spills the tea on the judiciary’s shift, the GOP’s silence on election truths, and why rural voters are the real kingmakers in 2024.

NEW: Unemployment Remains High as Inflation Outpaces Wages Under Trump
“Donald Trump and JD Vance’s economy gets worse by the day, and everyday Americans are paying the price. Employers are cutting jobs left and right, unemployment is persistently high, it’s getting even harder to find a full-time job, and skyrocketing prices are eating up more of Americans’ hard-earned paychecks. Working families are taking on more and more debt just to stay afloat, and Trump refuses to change course. Instead, he’s doubling down on his policies that have pushed prices even higher and tanked the job market while he builds his White House ballroom and hands out favors to his wealthy donors. Trump continues to put his ego first, while everyday Americans get left in the dust.”

Virginia Supreme Court Thrusts America Into Worst-Case Gerrymandering Scenario
What’s worse, the decision comes on the heels of two awful gerrymandering decisions from the Supreme Court. In the first, the court allowed the Texas map mentioned earlier to gerrymander across racial lines to favor Republicans. In the second, the court gutted the Voting Rights Act to allow Louisiana to gerrymander away majority-Black districts, again to favor Republicans. These decisions plus the Virginia decision in Scott head us toward a nightmare scenario that we’ve been inching closer to in recent years: a world where courts treat Republican gerrymanders with kid gloves and Democratic gerrymanders with brass knuckles. The results for our democracy could not be more dire.

Why Seed Patents—Yes, Seed Patents—Are Key to the Democrats’ Future
The short version is that conglomerate seed producers—notably Monsanto, which was acquired in 2018 by Bayer, the aspirin people, for $66 billion—have patented various seeds that farmers use, requiring them to buy new seeds every year. Corteva Agriscience is the other seed producer that, with Bayer, controls thousands of seed patents. Their claims aren’t wholly without merit—they invest a lot of money in all this. And it’s true that seeds can be patented not only in the United States but across Europe, as well. But the extent of the U.S. patent claims costs small farmers a lot of money because they can’t reuse seeds, and it has led to intense market concentration. So, as the caucus says, it’s not the existence of seed patent laws that’s the problem. It’s the abuse and overuse of them.
