Issue spotlight: North Dakota’s US House candidates weigh in on elections, mail-in voting

Democratic U.S. House candidate Trygve Hammer said mail-in voting, completed on a paper ballot, is as secure as in-person voting.
“It’s secure here, and it’s secure everywhere,” Hammer said. “I think it’s leadership malpractice to be casting all this doubt on the electoral system.”

North Dakota’s election processes are working “perfectly fine,” Hammer said.

Addressing male suicide takes individual, community engagement

Nationwide, farmers have a rate of suicide 3.5 times higher and veterans have a 58% higher risk than the general population.
In North Dakota, the number hovers around 10-15 farmer suicides per year, according to Markegard. Data from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs shows an average of 20 veteran suicides annually in the state.
Around 80% of suicides in North Dakota are men, with some of the highest rates compared to overall population in rural counties. In 2023, veterans accounted for a little over 13% of the 146 suicides in the state.

Data center dilemma: Who should decide where they go in North Dakota?

Democratic-NPL candidate for agriculture commissioner Vern Thompson said he has been summoned, on multiple occasions, to Republican-dominant farming communities over the matter — including Ellendale, where Applied Digital has a campus.

Thompson doesn’t want to stop the tech industry from doing business in the state, but he said he wants to avoid the land becoming the “wild west.”

“The way things are going, people and property are going to be harmed,” he said. “We have to do it right.”

Democratic-NPL Party chair to fill term for North Dakota lawmaker who died in plane crash

“We didn’t want to make someone who would have a long legislative career ahead of them use four years on a six-month term that didn’t have legislative business to do,” he said.
Goldwyn, who was Conmy’s neighbor, said he has mixed emotions about the appointment.
“I feel very humbled that District 11’s executive committee selected me,” Goldwyn said. “I wanted to be able to do this for her.”

How candidates for North Dakota’s top K-12 job would address teacher recruitment, retention

“I taught a couple years out of my field — in science — in Hatton, because they didn’t have a teacher,” she said.
Foss also said the larger class sizes that result from hiring constraints affect the quality of instruction students receive.

She works as a technology and engineering education teacher at Valley Middle School in Grand Forks. Foss said that her sixth grade classes have more than 20 students, which limits her ability to give one-on-one instruction.

Foss said if elected, her first goal would be to consult with educators affected by the problem.
“I don’t think we’re spending enough time looking at what the teachers are saying and why they’re leaving,” she said. “So I think we’re missing the boat on not looking for the root causes.”
Foss also said she’d be open to readjusting the K-12 funding formula.

“I’d kind of like to re-look at how we fund education and look at more of, ‘This is what the needs are, and this is how much it’s going to cost,’” she said.

Burgum’s Land Rule Changes are Hitting North Dakota and Helping Hamm

In January 2026, Hamm announced Continental would halt Bakken drilling for the first time in more than 30 years. “There’s no need to drill it when margins are basically gone.” The company that helped build the Bakken is pulling up, going to Wyoming, where his friend Doug Burgum had just cleared the path.

So, what happens when this bubble busts? Rural communities will be left holding the bill. The value of North Dakota is in its rural communities and way of life. Do not destroy that. Port’s closing was correct: “Our state’s future prosperity hinges on this debate”

Trump Spends $5 Million of Taxpayer Money to Gild Statues, While He Slashes Healthcare and Food Assistance

“Donald Trump is once again showing where his priorities are. Working families are cutting back on spending and dipping into their savings to make ends meet, and what is Trump doing? Spending taxpayer dollars to coat statues in gold. In Trump’s mind, there’s room in the budget for his wars, tax cuts, and vanity projects, but not healthcare, food assistance, or daycare for working families.”

NEW INFLATION DATA: Prices Surge To Record Highs as the Trump-Vance Economy Continues to Nosedive

“Donald Trump and JD Vance’s economy has made life unbearable for working families. Prices are soaring as consumers cut back on spending and stretch their budgets to afford basic necessities. Trump promised to ‘defeat inflation,’ but Americans are still stuck with skyrocketing prices on everything from gas to groceries to healthcare — all so Trump can bankroll his vanity projects and massive tax cuts for his wealthy donors.”

Why U.S. allies aren’t taking Trump seriously after his push for Arab-Israel normalization

Analysts said Trump’s last-minute condition was so sudden and unworkable, it would appear to most diplomats as a kind of cry for help from a leader who is desperate to wring a legacy-defining victory from his unpopular war.

Countries whom Trump needs to help him make a deal are simply not taking his demand seriously at all, regional observers and diplomats said.
“It’s gaslighting,” said Aaron David Miller, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a former senior State Department official under several American presidential administrations.

Trump’s $250 Greenback Is a Gift to the Criminal Class

Might that prospect deter our president? Of course not. Trump is already getting rich off crypto, another favored vehicle for criminal activity, and he’s pardoning cybercriminals and other white-collar scofflaws left and right. Trump is a convicted felon himself! Those banners featuring Trump’s scowling portrait that hang outside the Justice, Labor, and Agriculture departments? They’re inspired by, and for all I know are directly copied from, a mug shot taken when Trump got indicted three years ago for racketeering in Georgia. (Two years later, the prosecutor dismissed that case because “There is no realistic prospect that a sitting President will be compelled to appear in Georgia to stand trial.”) You can’t insult a person by saying he gives aid and comfort to criminals when that person compares himself to “the late, great” Al Capone. The convenience of a $250 bill for the criminal underworld isn’t a bug in Trump’s semiquincentennial celebration; it’s a feature. Happy birthday, America. Let’s try to do better in 2276.
