Statewide candidates, voters hold bipartisan forum discussing energy, agriculture issues
Braunberger, a state senator from Fargo, said in-person, town hall-style events are important because once candidates are elected they represent the residents of an entire district, or state, not only members of a political party that helped put them into office.
Braunberger added the forums are also important because Democratic ideals may be challenged by attendees and that dialog is valuable for policymaking.

NDSU head football coach to become highest-paid public employee in the state
Rep. Gretchen Dobervich, D-Fargo, the assistant House minority leader, said it’s a lot of money to pay a public employee, especially given Republican Gov. Kelly Armstrong’s recent request for state agencies to trim their budgets for the 2027-29 biennium.
“It’s … kind of sticker shock as a practical, thrifty North Dakotan,” Dobervich said.

Data center dilemma: Who should decide where they go in North Dakota?
Democratic-NPL candidate for agriculture commissioner Vern Thompson said he has been summoned, on multiple occasions, to Republican-dominant farming communities over the matter — including Ellendale, where Applied Digital has a campus.
Thompson doesn’t want to stop the tech industry from doing business in the state, but he said he wants to avoid the land becoming the “wild west.”
“The way things are going, people and property are going to be harmed,” he said. “We have to do it right.”

Burgum’s Land Rule Changes are Hitting North Dakota and Helping Hamm
Continental argued in a court filing that “the political process, and not the National Environmental Policy Act, provides the appropriate forum” for policy disputes. Translation: we won the politics, so the law shouldn’t stop us.
North Dakota helped make Harold Hamm a billionaire. The Bakken made Continental what it is. And now that Hamm has a friend running federal land policy, the drills are moving to Wyoming, the pipeline is going to Wyoming, and North Dakota is staring at budget cuts.
Doug Burgum used to be our governor. He wanted to appear like he was a fighter for North Dakota. Instead, he’s been clearing the field for the guy who just left.

ND Ag Commission candidate, Vern Thompson, speaks to data center debate
Joel Heitkamp is joined in the KFGO studio by Vern Thompson to talk about data centers and the Farm Bill. Vern has spent his life farming, trucking hazardous bulk liquids, serving in the state legislature, leading as mayor of Minnewaukan during the Devils Lake flood fight, and is now running for ND Agriculture Commissioner.

Public Service Commission candidates weigh in on prospect of carbon pipelines
“There needs to be rigorous diligence in the Public Service Commission on a case-by-case basis of what the project is,” Pederson said.
He said the CO2 having an industrial use would have a great economic impact.
“Does that have an excess negative impact on the environment?” he asked, adding that it may vary depending on the project.

Shamefully abandoning Ukrainians overseas and in Fargo-Moorhead
Despite all this, Donald Trump has abandoned the good and innocent people of Ukraine. His siding with the barbaric Putin is disgraceful. Perhaps the most shameful moment since Trump and JD Vance came into power, was when they berated Ukrainian President Zelenskyy in the White House for seeking assistance from the U.S.
Previous Republican presidents, such as Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush would have stood firm against the Russians, and stood strong for freedom. However, Trump has turned the Republican Party away from traditional American values and towards support of evil dictators.
“Siding with Russia is completely wrong,” Michael Southam, co-founder of F-M Volunteers for Ukraine told me. “It goes against everything we stand for.”

Small farmers form coalition to push back against proposed 2026 U.S. Farm Bill
"If you're a young farmer or a smaller farmer, it's like everything's stacked against you. The policies as well as this concentration across the industry," he said. "If you go buy fertilizer, when you buy your seeds, you're dealing with just a few companies, some of the same companies. They just have locks on so much of this, it's really difficult to get out of that, or innovate, or be small."

US House rejects constraint on Trump action in Iran, one day after Senate
The measure, known as the War Powers Resolution, is a tool for Congress to limit the president’s ability to initiate or escalate military actions abroad. The resolution failed in a 212-212 vote. Most Democrats voted for the measure, though Jared Golden of Maine opposed it. Three Republicans also crossed party lines to vote in favor. They were Tom Barrett of Michigan, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and Thomas Massie of Kentucky.

Trump’s January 6 Slush Fund Is a Criminal Enterprise
If Trump were to claim even a single dollar from the Anti-Weaponization Fund, he would be violating the domestic emoluments clause in Article 2. The clause specifies that the president receives a fixed salary, but simultaneously bars him from accepting “any other Emolument from the United States, or any of them.” What counts as an “official act” by a president is a nebulous concept at best under the Supreme Court’s reasoning. If there is anything that falls outside that scope, however, it would be something that is explicitly forbidden by Article 2.

How Private Equity Gutted Local Malls: Joann Fabrics, Red Lobster, Claire's, and More.
It’s the same story every time: Private equity marches in, a few wealthy investors buy the outfit, strip out the assets, load the company up with debt, and suck money out of it until it collapses.
Then, after thousands and thousands of workers have been laid off, after pensions get raided, and after stores close, those private equity firms walk away with their pockets stuffed with cash.
And there goes your local mall and all the stores you grew up with.
