Tomorrow will mark the third anniversary of the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. As Trump continues to ramp up his vile, despotic rhetoric, some Republican lawmakers seem to have forgotten the horrors they saw that day. Both Cramer and Hoeven have endorsed him for president again.

President Biden spoke about the Capitol attack today in Valley Forge, PA, where George Washington recouped and trained Continental soldiers. Biden remarked:

“The mob that attacked the Capitol on January 6th, waving Trump flags and Confederate flags, stormed right past the portrait. The image of George Washington gave them no pause – but it should have. The artist who painted the portrait memorialized this moment because he said it was ‘one of the highest moral lessons ever given to the world.’ George Washington was at the height of his power having just defeated the most powerful empire on Earth. He could have held onto that power as long as he wanted. But that wasn’t the America he and the American troops of Valley Forge had fought for. In America, our leaders don’t hold on to power relentlessly. Our leaders return power to the people – willingly. You do your duty. You serve your country. And ours is a country worthy of service. We are not perfect, but at our best, we face head on the good, the bad, the truth of who we are. That’s what great nations do, and we are a great nation – the greatest of nations. That’s the America I see in our future. We get up. We carry on. We speak of possibilities – not carnage. We’re not weighed down by grievance. We don’t foster fear. We don’t walk around as victims. We take charge of our destiny. We get the job done – to help people find their place in a changing world and dream and build the future we all deserve. We don’t believe America is failing. We know America is winning. That’s American patriotism.”

I won't be the first or last person to tell you that democracy is on the ballot this November. Our American patriotism calls us to protect it.

Democrat Trygve Hammer to challenge Armstrong for House seat

Hammer, of Minot, said he believes his work and military experiences will help him connect with North Dakota voters who may feel disaffected by the current Republican party.

“There are a lot of Republicans here who are not Matt Gaetz-Republicans, they are not Jim Jordan-Republicans,” Hammer said. “They are tired of that little cabal in the House of Representatives having their way with everything. And the only way that doesn’t happen in the next session is if Republicans do not have the majority; otherwise, it’s going to be the same dynamic going on.”

Letter: The legend of Martin Luther King Jr. lives on

“Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land!”.

Nearly 60 years later it feels like the same struggle continues. Recently, North Dakota Representative Nico Rios made local and national news for using racist and homophobic rhetoric. The cycles of pain, frustration, and inequity can feel hopeless or like we’re moving nowhere.

Minimum wage policy still varies across U.S.

She said even though employers are increasingly offering higher wages in a tight labor market, competitive pay isn't reaching everyone.

"So, that $7.25 really matters, but it's less binding today than it was in the past," said Dresser. "But for the workers who really have those constraints on opportunity because of their concerns about immigration status, concerns about physical mobility - employers can really take advantage of that."

McFeely: Topping scandal-filled '23 tough task for NDGOP in '24

Holmberg was in the legislature for 45 years. He was as well-connected as any legislator could be. A Grand Forks Herald profile in 2021 that named him the newspaper's "Person of the Year" said, "Close observers describe Holmberg's sway within the party as rivaling that of a majority leader."

And yet ...

And yet nobody in the North Dakota Republican Party knew Holmberg's personal inclinations? They didn't attend parties with Holmberg where perhaps things were said, or hinted at? There was no clue? Nobody knew?

Disgraced former lawmaker says disgraced current lawmaker shouldn't resign

It is tempting to write off Simons' meandering, semi-literate argle-bargle as so much unintentional comedy, but the wing of the NDGOP that believes book bans and other culture war ephemera should be our state's top legislative priority takes this stuff seriously.

They're listening to Simons weave conspiracies about how the calls on Rios to resign are about his conservative voting record, not the horrific slurs with which he assailed two law enforcement officers and his attempts to use his status as an elected official to get out of an arrest.

Speaking out: In politics, character doesn’t count

Trump has set a table unlike any previous American candidate of any party. He faces multiple charges of federal election interference in Georgia and on the federal level, multiple charges of taking sensitive national security documents, and charges of falsifying business records to cover up a payoff to a porn star.

He has been accused of rape and sexual assault including civil verdicts finding him guilty, and a finding in New York that he and his organization falsified business financial statements.

Trump Said He Would Fight For Workers. He Fought For Business Lobbies Instead.

It was the first of many Trump actions that benefitted employers at the expense of everyday workers, including those at the very bottom of the economy.

Over his four years in the White House, Trump tried to make it easier for companies to hide workers’ injuries, to avoid paying low-wage employees for their overtime, to take a slice of their tips, to misclassify them as “independent contractors,” and to prevent them from unionizing and bargaining collectively. He nominated a fast-food executive to be the nation’s top workplace regulator, in charge of making sure workers come home safe and get paid what they’re owed.

Three years after the January 6 attack, propaganda about the insurrection is poisoning the American public

The U.S. will mark the anniversary of the January 6 insurrection on Saturday, a milestone that will confer upon the reality-dwelling citizenry a grim reminder of the potency of propaganda and how quickly it can warp perception when introduced into the public square.

Just three years ago, most of the country watched with dismay and horror as a violent MAGA mob beat back authorities and stormed the country’s citadel of democracy. The Donald Trump-incited crush of disillusioned rioters, fueled by a stream of fantastical lies, believed that the 2020 election had been stolen by sinister forces working to undermine the democratic election.

America’s unique, enduring gun problem, explained

While the majority of Americans support more gun control restrictions, including universal background checks, a vocal Republican minority unequivocally opposes such laws — and is willing to put pressure on GOP lawmakers to do the same. Alongside the NRA, and a well-funded gun lobby, this contingent of voters sees gun control as a deciding issue, and one that could warrant a primary challenge for a lawmaker who votes for it.

Ahead of second E. Jean Carroll trial, Trump has online meltdown

The jury did not find the defendant liable for rape, though a judge later concluded that the former president, for all intents and purposes, “‘raped’ her as many people commonly understand the word ‘rape.’”

This was not, however, the final word on the subject. As NBC News reported, the Republican is still facing a second defamation trial, stemming from comments Trump made about Carroll in 2019. The former president and his lawyers have tried to delay that case, and to date, they’ve failed. The result is a trial that’s poised to begin in a couple of weeks.
