Former lieutenant governor, political scientist Lloyd Omdahl dies at 93

“He was a true statesman. He studied issues thoroughly, asked pertinent questions and spoke respectfully to everyone. He loved a good debate on issues and encouraged us to disagree or question his opinions, which I did often. Mostly he loved North Dakota, both the land and the people,” state Sen. Kathy Hogan, D-Fargo, said.

The Voice of the People — Episode 9: North Dakota politics with party leaders

Goldwyn: Right, like the narrative that illegal immigrants are flooding across our southern border. That’s an emotional claim that you’re making. But again, we’re talking about what are the policies that actually help North Dakotans, that actually help Americans? And there was a bipartisan border bill, and it was only, what, two, three months ago that that bill was, that bill supported by Biden, supported by congressional Democrats, was voted down by Republicans. So again, are we a nation in search of solutions? Are we holding on to problems so that we can try and indict the other party and hold the other party responsible and damage other party presidential prospects, while actual real Americans are suffering.

Letter: Repeal of the Affordable Care Act would harm our most vulnerable

Before the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies could deny claims to people with pre-existing conditions, which allowed them to deny coverage to millions of people for outrageous reasons. If Trump succeeds in gutting the Affordable Care Act, it would once again allow insurance companies to deny Americans coverage or charge them more for pre-existing conditions like asthma, heart disease, arthritis, and sleep disorders. Women would be especially impacted: pregnancy, breast cancer, and even domestic violence could be considered “pre-existing conditions” that insurance companies could use to deny a woman coverage or charge her more. Insurance companies used Americans’ pre-existing conditions to turn a profit by bringing financial ruin – or worse – to millions of Americans. If Trump’s plan to get rid of the Affordable Care Act passes, nothing will stop them from doing it again.

Shaw: A refreshing speech and a fiasco

Merrill Piepkorn’s acceptance speech as the Democratic candidate for governor was a breath of fresh air. Unlike most candidates these days, he didn’t bash anyone. Instead, he superbly talked about how we need to love our neighbors, and that he would be the governor of everyone in the state. In this strongly partisan and divisive climate, Piepkorn said he would be glad to work with Republicans.

Piepkorn emphasized the need to do things that would help so many of us. That included lower property taxes, free school lunches, affordable housing, access to mental health care, and more programs for drug and alcohol addiction. It was refreshing to hear Piepkorn say we need to take care of each other. We need more politicians like that.

McFeely: The problem with Republicans is Republicans

In a state where Republicans would just have to be a little normal to take control of the state legislature, they are openly promoting conspiracy theories instead of something that might gain suburban votes like, say, school lunches for all or day-care assistance.

Republicans have gone 'round the bend not because of Democrats, but because the GOP sold out to the loons 30 years ago (see: Newt Gingrich) and the bill is coming due.

The problem isn't Democrats, it's Republicans. This is, increasingly, who they are. And the dwindling number of mainstream GOPers remaining are having their faces eaten by the leopard they released.

Who could've seen that coming, except everybody?

Letter: Trump subverts GOP for undemocratic goals, power

This short paragraph from Washington informs us that Donald Trump, as unprincipled a man as this country has ever seen, has subverted the Republican Party in pursuit of his own undemocratic goals and lust for power. There isn’t an institution in our Government that Trump wouldn’t try to destroy on a whim if we allow him. Will the Republican Party stand up to Trump? No, they will scurry around saying they supported Trump the fustest with the mostest while ignoring the damage he has done, and plans to do to our country.

McFeely: Is an endorsement from Matt Gaetz really worth bragging about?

Tell the truth about Biden’s economy

We could have brought supply and demand into balance by throttling the purchasing power of the most vulnerable working-class households: If you condemn 10 percent of the workforce to unemployment and 20 percent of households to poverty, you’ll alleviate inflationary pressure, since fewer people will have the money necessary for bidding up prices.

Instead, we chose to minimize the recession’s impact on the vulnerable to a historically unprecedented degree. A painful, but fleeting, period of high inflation proved to be the price of this decision.

Unfortunately, most voters do not recognize the connection between the Biden era’s inflation and its low unemployment or strong wage growth. A new analysis of survey data by the Harvard economist Stefanie Stantcheva lends credence to an old hypothesis: People tend to attribute wage gains to their own efforts or their employers’ largesse — rather than to market dynamics — even as they blame price increases on government mismanagement.

This is a potential problem for progressive macroeconomic policy. If voters will punish elected officials for presiding over inflation but won’t necessarily give them credit for engineering real wage gains, then Congress will have an incentive to err on the side of understimulating the economy during the next recession.

The Middle Class Will Pay the Price for Trump’s Tax Cuts for the Wealthy, Including Repealing the Affordable Care Act

Just as importantly, Trump has proposed partially paying for these tax cuts for the wealthy with policies that would increase the middle class’s cost of living. Trump has proposed a blanket tariff on all imports, which would cost a typical family about $125 per month—roughly $1,500 annually. He would also likely attempt to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act’s electric vehicle tax credits and the Biden administration’s vehicle emissions rule, which would eventually increase the typical family’s gasoline bill by about $25 each month.

Emergency rooms refused to treat pregnant women, leaving one to miscarry in a lobby restroom

“It is shocking, it’s absolutely shocking,” said Amelia Huntsberger, an OB/GYN in Oregon. “It is appalling that someone would show up to an emergency room and not receive care -- this is inconceivable.”

It’s happened despite federal mandates that the women be treated.

Federal law requires emergency rooms to treat or stabilize patients who are in active labor and provide a medical transfer to another hospital if they don’t have the staff or resources to treat them. Medical facilities must comply with the law if they accept Medicare funding.

The Supreme Court will hear arguments Wednesday that could weaken those protections. The Biden administration has sued Idaho over its abortion ban, even in medical emergencies, arguing it conflicts with the federal law.

“No woman should be denied the care she needs,” Jennifer Klein, director of the White House Gender Policy Council, said in a statement. “All patients, including women who are experiencing pregnancy-related emergencies, should have access to emergency medical care required under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act.”

The Trump Trial Is Already Influencing Public Opinion

It’s important to remember that this is really an election interference trial, with a crucial trifecta of sex, money, and voter deception. So, yes, the public opinion data is one way to understand the influence—and in fact, it points toward this case being quite consequential. But the larger, as yet unquantifiable element of this criminal lawsuit currently playing out in the midst of a presidential election is the story it transmits. The trial is a long-awaited step toward accountability for a presidential candidate publicly performing the role of criminal defendant, sitting reluctantly before a jury of other Americans. This telegraphs a very loud tale about him and, more importantly, the stakes of this election. We don’t yet understand the effect that part will have on voters—it hasn’t happened yet.

Kamala Harris hammers Trump on abortion in Arizona visit

“President Donald Trump hand-picked three members of the United States Supreme Court because he intended for them to overturn Roe, and as he intended they did,” she said in Tucson.

Harris also pointed to Trump's previous comments about how women who seek abortions should be punished.

"Joe Biden and I trust women to know what is in their own best interest," the vice president said. "And women trust all of us, to fight to protect their most fundamental freedoms. So Arizona, this November, up and down the ballot, reproductive freedom is at stake and you have the power to protect it with your vote."
