The news of Mercer County Sheriff's Deputy Paul Martin death is heartwrenching. As the AP reported, “The 42-year-old son of U.S. Sen. Kevin Cramer was charged Thursday with manslaughter and fleeing an officer after a police pursuit ended in a crash that killed a North Dakota sheriff’s deputy”

Our Party Chair Adam Goldwyn said in a radio interview on Thursday, “Despite our political differences with Senator Cramer, it’s an absolute tragedy for the officer, the officer’s family, and loved ones, and we hope that Sen. Cramer and his family can find healing during this difficult time. [We need to] find some way to improve the mental health response situation in North Dakota so that tragedies like this become rarer and rarer.”

It’s hard to find any family that has been touched by mental illness. Tragedies like this are a stark reminder that services and research dedicated to helping those with mental and behavioral health issues are shamefully underfunded. It’s incredibly important that we continue to work to change this.

While it cannot be overstated that more needs to be done, we want you to know that there are resources available if you or a loved one needs help: https://www.hhs.nd.gov/behavioral-health/mental-health

Rep. Zachary Ista, D-Grand Forks, who voted against the motion, said during the meeting he believes lawmakers should let the appeals court process play out.

"I think getting us toward finality and certainty with an election on the horizon is important," he said, referring to the 2024 election.

Doug Burgum suspends presidential campaign

The North Dakota Democratic Party called Burgum's run for president "a vanity campaign from a bored billionaire."

"After bribing his way onto the first two debate stages, Gov. Doug Burgum has dropped out of the 2024 Republican Presidential Primary," North Dakota Democratic-NPL Chair Adam Goldwyn said in a statement. "As we predicted in June, Burgum’s presidential campaign was a short one."

Speaking out: Prichard’s radical stance on initiated measures has no audience in North Dakota

For these reasons, the recently announced position of Rep. Brandon Prichard on the initiated measure process is laughably extreme. The Republican District 8 representative to the state House tweeted on Nov. 7 that “Direct democracy should not exist.” Let’s lay this bare: Prichard thinks that initiated measure processes -- that North Dakotans are hesitant to even modify -- should actually be abolished!

Republicans need intelligent debate on property taxes

Would real estate tax elimination be a tax break or merely a tax shift? What other forms of taxes or fees are more acceptable to pay for predictable essential local cost increases? If real estate property taxes are too high, are our Republican legislature and Republican governor incapable of finding a reasonable solution? Hopefully our Republican brothers and sisters will have an intelligent debate regarding these questions rather than calling each other names. The average citizen just wants a functional government. Is that too much to ask?

Bender: Deregulation's great for corporate America

If we keep deregulating at this pace, eventually we'll have woke chaps! Consider the big picture. Sure, oil spills decimate fisheries, your tap water's flammable, monopolies are price-gouging, and your dog has three heads. Relax. You can't afford your life expectancy as it is. And when corporations make enough, it'll trickle down so you can afford to move. Sure, they're making record profits. They just need record-er profits

WATCH NOW: U.S. Senate Campaign’s Viral Ad in the Heartland

The video provides a glimpse into Katrina Christiansen's passion for public service and the values that drive her commitment to representing the people of North Dakota in the U.S. Senate. "Wolves" is now available here on social media platforms.

It is crucial that Democrats hold the Senate, and understand the 2024 Senate map is challenging. That is why we must compete in every state with a history of electing Democrats. This seat was Sen. Heitkamp's seat and was held by a Democrat from 1960-2018. Katrina is running against Kevin Cramer, an unpopular official who has lost three times before in the state and isn't sitting on a lot of campaign money

Biden campaign slams Republicans on health care policies

"Here’s a fact that conveniently didn’t come up on tonight’s debate stage: The Republicans running for president — led by Donald J. Trump — will make sure that the millions of Americans benefiting from lifesaving health care suffer if Republicans have their way and dismantle the ACA," campaign spokesperson Kevin Munoz said.

U.S. payrolls rose 199,000 in November, unemployment rate falls to 3.7%

Nonfarm payrolls rose by a seasonally adjusted 199,000 for the month, slightly better than the 190,000 Dow Jones estimate and ahead of the unrevised October gain of 150,000, the Labor Department reported Friday. The numbers were boosted by sizeable gains in government hiring as well as workers returning from strikes in the auto and entertainment industries.

The unemployment rate declined to 3.7%, compared with the forecast for 3.9%, as the labor force participation rate edged higher to 62.8%. A more encompassing unemployment rate that includes discouraged workers and those holding part-time positions for economic reasons fell to 7%, a decline of 0.2 percentage point.

Biden hits Trump over travel ban threats on anniversary of ‘Muslim ban’ proposal

President Biden on Thursday took aim at former President Trump’s travel ban policies, marking the eighth anniversary of the so-called “Muslim ban” pushed by Trump in the 2016 election.

Trump released the proposal in December 2015, when he was vying for the Republican presidential nomination, calling “for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.”

Donald Trump's dream team looks like an American nightmare

It's really not a joking matter actually. All the people mentioned in the Axios piece may be third-rate political figures but they are also dangerous authoritarians and Trump sycophants who would have no compunction about pushing whatever buttons they have at their disposal to punish their enemies and vanquish the political opposition. What they lack in integrity they make up for in malevolence and it's simply unthinkable that the U.S. government would be in their hands.

Biden campaign says jobs report shows he is ‘cleaning up the economic disaster’ Trump left

“Joe Biden has now created more jobs in less than three years than any president created in four, cleaning up the economic disaster [Trump] left behind,” Biden-Harris 2024 spokesperson Seth Schuster said in a statement.

“There’s more work to be done, but his record shows Americans can’t trust Trump to do it. Instead of standing up to corporate greed to lower costs and raise wages for working people, Trump would double down on the same failed policies that gave massive tax cuts to the rich and big corporations, while creating incentives to ship American jobs overseas,” he added.

A Texas judge ruled a pregnant woman who sued the state seeking an abortion can legally terminate her pregnancy

In an emergency hearing Thursday, a judge granted a temporary restraining order against the state that would allow Cox to immediately have an abortion.

“The idea that Mrs. Cox wants desperately to be a parent, and this law might actually cause her to lose that ability is shocking and would be a genuine miscarriage of justice,” Judge Maya Guerra Gamble said. “So I will be signing the order and it will be processed and sent out today.”

Cox and her husband were present for the hearing – which took place over Zoom – and grew emotional at the judge’s decision and could be seen wiping away tears.
