Issue spotlight: North Dakota US House candidates differ on solutions to affordability
Hammer said allowing the war to continue just because Americans have already suffered casualties and paid a financial cost is a false argument for continuing operations. Congress had the opportunity to make its concerns known earlier in the engagement and declined to exercise any authority, he said.
“It’s basically a tax at the gas pump and at the grocery store,” Hammer said. “These are self-inflicted wounds that we didn’t have to have, and if Congress had been exercising its authority, being the check and balance that they are supposed to be, then we might not have had those things.”

District 7 House Candidate Debate
Mental health is very important for me as an educator. I believe that we need more services. We cannot continue to have teachers be inside the classroom and expect for them to be mental health providers inside the classrooms. That's what we currently are dealing with at this time.
Now, from my expertise, from being in health care operations for many years, something that I think in North Dakota that we need to do, we need to think about increasing our service lines. I've been listening to people at the doors. They don't want telemedicine. They actually want to be able to go into a facility to get services.

District 7 Senate Candidate Debate
When it comes to health care, I think the one thing that we can do at a state level, because it is also a federal problem, but at a state level is I think we could put more of an emphasis on primary care and primary care helps keep people out of hospitals and lowers health care costs. And we are going to have to deal with some serious medical issues in the future.

Ag commissioner challenger highlights data centers; incumbent calls move ‘grandstanding’
Thompson said North Dakota residents are feeling run over by those projects.
He pointed to rural roads rutted by construction traffic, property owners being threatened with eminent domain and industrial development changing the rural landscape.
Thompson runs a trucking company in Fargo but has a farm background in Benson County.
Thompson said one priority for him is to address food affordability by pushing for a meat processing cooperative in the state.
He said consumers are paying for the high transportation costs of North Dakota beef going to out-of-state processing and then having the processed meat come back into the state.
He said limited competition among the “big four” meat packers keeps meat prices high.
“Farmers and ranchers aren’t the problem when it comes to the high cost of food,” Thompson said. “When it comes to the high cost of beef in the grocery store, it’s the meat packers.”

2nd Fargo-area data center would use double the power of Harwood site
Harmony Township resident Dustin Burchill spoke at a community meeting in Casselton on Sept. 15. He cited a second Geronimo solar project, which PSC documents show as being 4 miles northeast of Casselton.
Geronimo also sees potential for a 500-megawatt wind farm northwest of Casselton, according to a 10-year plan filed with the PSC, though the company said it is not part of the data center project.

District 35 House Candidate Debate
I was very disappointed that the bill that would have prohibited non-disclosure agreements between data center developers and public officials failed in the special session. To me, the first and foremost responsibility of a representative is to represent. And part of that is communication. That is transparency.

NEW: With 32 Days Until the Midterms, Wages Fail To Keep Up With Inflation in Trump’s Economy
“Donald Trump and JD Vance hollowed out the job market, leaving Americans struggling to find good-paying jobs — while sky-high prices on gas and groceries have swallowed up Americans’ wages. Trump promised to ‘defeat inflation,’ but instead he imposed reckless tariffs and started a war with Iran that have made everyday life unaffordable for working families. Now, in the final stretch leading up to the midterms, Trump’s economy continues to crush everyday Americans — and voters are fed up.”

High gas prices are spurring states to waive taxes and regulations amid midterm election
State officials nationwide are focusing on rising gas and diesel prices tied to the war in Iran, offering gas tax holidays and other measures to ease costs as affordability remains a top voter concern in the critical midterm elections.
The high gas prices took center stage in Ohio on Wednesday, as lawmakers passed a 90-day state gas tax holiday with broad bipartisan support. Including Ohio, about one-third of U.S. states have implemented some form of fuel tax relief, with many taking action within the past week, according to an Associated Press review.

NYT: Anthropic Nearly Walked Out on Pope Leo XIV’s AI Encyclical — Then Lobbied His Advisers
Leo did not move. Paragraph 99 of Magnifica Humanitas says that so-called artificial intelligences “do not undergo experiences, do not possess a body, do not feel joy or pain.” Nor, the pope writes, “do they have a moral conscience.”
I do not think Olah is a bad man. He has acted in good faith, and I have credited him for engaging the Church while much of his industry sneered at the encyclical. But the ask shows how little Silicon Valley understands the Church, or religion at all.
