Letter: We need answers about management of North Dakota's Development Fund
How did this happen? Which problems have already been fixed? How are potential conflicts of interest handled today? How closely are delinquent and high-risk loans being monitored? When the state says one of these investments created jobs, who verifies those numbers? And does state law need to change so we do not find ourselves having this same conversation five years from now?
|
This is also part of a broader concern I have about state government oversight. Between the Development Fund, the Child Care Assistance Program funding problems and what happened with the Military Gallery, we have repeatedly seen major problems grow before the Legislature is forced to confront them.

District 31 House Candidate Debate
Rissa Williams: I go to the Bismarck VA clinic. They also have walk-in capabilities. And you said money to the patient. No money. Exchanges hands at the VA clinic. If you’re talking about funding and patient care. Again, my patient care has been exemplary. So for you to make a phone call to someone who may or may not be a veteran and may or may not have received that care, I’m speaking from personal experience.

District 47 Senate Candidate Debate
Bill Patrie: I would oppose vouchers to private schools. I’ll just tell you why. Our family was extremely poor when I grew up. They had less than $3,000 a year income, public school was my ticket out of poverty, and it still is for many people. I don’t begrudge people having private schools, that’s wonderful. They just don’t need taxpayer support.

Absentee ballots available for North Dakota voters
Voters can fill out an absentee ballot application via websites for the secretary of state or their county, or in person at their county auditor’s office. County election officials send voters a ballot after reviewing and verifying their application information, Secretary of State Michael Howe said.

Speaking out: Measure 1 would hamstring voters
Ultimately, I trust a simple majority of North Dakota ballot measure voters to decide what comes into, or what exits, our state constitution more than I trust the hamstringing that Measure 1 would bring. There is no good evidence that North Dakotans are getting hoodwinked by out-of-state interests, clumsily voting for things they would not want upon closer examination. Proponents of Measure 1 simply dislike the empowered self-governance that majority rule brings to voters.

Public trust in focus: North Dakota’s Development Fund and Supreme Court race
Two stories this week put a spotlight on institutions that depend heavily on public trust.
|
Reporter Jack Dura joins host Craig Blumenshine to discuss a recent audit of the North Dakota Development Fund, a state-backed program that provides loans and investments to businesses.
|
Dura also talks about his recent reporting on a contested North Dakota Supreme Court race that is nonpartisan but has involved endorsements and events from Republicans.

Fargo-area lawmakers work to change fleeing laws
Sen. Jamie Selzler, D-Fargo, said the pattern of crashes is "clearly a problem."
|
"There's no real incentive not to flee," Selzler said.
|
Selzler is working with other local lawmakers to make it mandatory that if someone is convicted of fleeing they must serve the sentence consecutively with any other charges. Currently, the sentence is usually served at the same time with other charges.
|
The hope, Selzler said, is that "knowing fleeing is going to mean extra time in prison, maybe that will be deter people from doing it."

Audit identifies millions in North Dakota Development Fund deals with board ties
A recent performance audit of the North Dakota Development Fund identified nearly $4 million in funding given to entities with ties to the fund's board members from 2019-24, but said a lack of documentation made it difficult to get a full picture of board members' conflicts of interest and how those conflicts were handled.
|
The North Dakota Development Fund, or NDDF, is a state-administered financing program under the Commerce Department designed to provide loans and equity investments for new or expanding businesses in the state. The recent performance audit found a widespread lack of documentation and standardized practices at the fund, which the audit said instead relied on informal practices not supported by written policy in the lending, investment and monitoring of millions of dollars worth of taxpayer money.

Corn Suffering in Western ND
Corn prospects aren’t much better. “Not much for yield—25-bushel yield on them. Corn is suffering pretty bad.” Recent rainfall has softened the ground and could provide an opportunity for fall fieldwork.

Under Trump and Rollins, Prices Are Devastating American Families and Farmers
“Donald Trump and Republicans have proved to the American people that they couldn’t care less about them. Trump’s reckless tariffs and war with Iran have pushed working families and farmers to the brink, as costs for everything from fuel to fertilizer skyrocket, as farmers start fall harvest, and it becomes nearly impossible to make ends meet. But what is the Trump administration doing to fix their mess? Nothing — except telling Americans to suck it up. Voters will remember who turned their backs on them this November.”

Venezuelan men shipped to brutal prison under Alien Enemies Act ask court for due process
He said the Trump administration is asking for the ability to “essentially whisk people away to a foreign prison, give them no opportunity to contest the removal, even whether they're part of this gang that this proclamation applies to… and then say, ‘Because we got them out of the country into a foreign prison, that's the end of the matter.’”

Diesel prices shoot upward as top farm-state GOP senator begs Trump for export embargo
Diesel prices hit a record average of $6.51 a gallon Monday, and some in President Donald Trump’s own party are breaking their support for the ongoing war in Iran that has driven fuel prices to staggering levels in the United States and across the globe.

ChatGPT Helped Tumbler Ridge Shooter Focus on Guns, Tactics, and Terror
|
In June 2025, Jesse Van Rootselaar received an email notification from OpenAI. Van Rootselaar had been using ChatGPT to discuss committing potential acts of violence—including a mass shooting at a shopping mall—and now OpenAI had banned that account. But the troubled teen living in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, was not deterred and soon logged back on with a second account.
|
What happened next was astonishing: Van Rootselaar told ChatGPT about the account ban, noting she had specified “a famous real-world mall as the target” and herself as the perpetrator, but also claiming the scenario hadn’t been real. In response, ChatGPT explained why such violent content would be flagged—and then offered tips on how to evade its own safeguards. It advised Van Rootselaar to always frame her content as fictional or hypothetical in order to “never get flagged again” by OpenAI’s moderation systems.

|
|
|

The North Dakota Democratic-NPL is launching a new grassroots program called “Neighbor to Neighbor” where volunteers will connect with voters in your community to elect Democrats up and down the ballot.
