Dem-NPL Organizers attend NextWave BootCamp
|
|
This week, Regional Field Organizer Nicole DesRosier and Fargo Organizer Andrea Alfson were in Chicago attending the NextWave BootCamp hosted by the DNC training team. They were able to attend the Obama Library ahead of the training and see a little of Chicago. But mostly, they got to learn from Campaign managers, and trainers, and interact with other state party staff, organizers, and others to learn the newest tools and get trained on how to do their jobs better. Your amazing Century Club contributions make it possible for us to support our staff in this way, and our state party infrastructure becomes so much more robust because they get this opportunity!

We are so excited to have 3 all organizers on staff to drive the Make American Good Again Campaign! Andrea Alfson is working in Fargo, and all of Region 8; Sarah Grossbauer will be starting July 1, covering the greater Grand Forks area; and Nicole DesRosier continues working in Minot and the western regions. They all bring so much experience to our team to make sure volunteers not only stay on track with our goals but also make sure we all have some fun along the way.

Data centers in North Dakota have received millions in sales tax breaks
|
Data center owners in North Dakota have reaped tens of millions of dollars in state sales tax breaks in the last two years, figures that have ballooned as public scrutiny has intensified on data center projects.
|
|
The Legislature’s interim Tax Reform and Relief Advisory Committee on Wednesday heard a series of reports about data center tax exemptions and incentives, including what North Dakota and other states offer. State Tax Commissioner Brian Kroshus outlined exponential growth in sales and use tax exemptions for data center owners on information technology equipment, such as computer hardware, servers, routers, cooling systems and other infrastructure.

Those sales tax breaks, which are not for construction, ranged from $5.4 million in 2021 to $7.8 million in 2023, then leapt to $15.3 million in 2024 and more than $65 million last year.

Residents voice concerns over Mandan data center during town hall
One of Mathern’s bills would have temporarily banned North Dakota counties, cities and townships from issuing construction permits for data center projects through June 2027, but that proposal did not advance out of the committee.
|
“Data centers developing across America have dramatic impacts on communities, the energy grid and infrastructure demands,” Mathern said Monday. “Data centers create potential economic benefits, but also great stressors, and, if not done correctly, great harm.”

The letter from the DOJ doesn’t confirm whether the records The Forum requested exist. A North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation report released a month after Holmberg's sentencing hearing said federal agents interviewed several of Holmberg’s close friends, including the late North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem. Stenehjem died unexpectedly in late January 2022 from cardiac arrest, almost two months after federal agents interviewed the state’s top law enforcement agent Dec. 1, 2021.

Patients wary of governments, companies pushing AI as a rural healthcare solution
Several states want to use AI to analyze patients’ medical charts and remote monitoring devices to identify immediate or future health risks. North Dakota’s plans mention AI to “detect early signs of chronic disease and behavioral health conditions,” while New Hampshire’s discusses AI that identifies patients “at high risk of adverse drug events.”

Sens. Mark Kelly of Arizona and Mazie Hirono of Hawaii in April introduced a bill in the Senate, alongside nearly 30 of their colleagues, that would repeal the program.

Rep. Gwen Moore of Wisconsin introduced a companion bill in the House in June with Reps. Suzanne Bonamici of Oregon, Maxwell Frost of Florida, Adelita Grijalva of Arizona, Mark Pocan of Wisconsin and dozens more original co-sponsors.
