Salary: Starting at $55,000 and is commensurate with experience

Overall Description:

The North Dakota Democratic-NPL is seeking applications for an Executive Director. The Executive Director, in coordination with the Chair, serves as the chief strategic and programmatic executive of the Dem-NPL. The Executive Director is responsible for managing the offices, staff, and daily operations of the Dem-NPL. The Dem-NPL is seeking an individual who is proactive, responsive, honest, loyal, and discreet. This individual must also be able and willing to work with a diverse group of staff, volunteers, elected officials, and party leaders. Finally, this individual must be able to step into the role of Executive Director with confidence and competence immediately.

Primary Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Fundraising and Finance

  • Direct and supervise all fundraising efforts of the state party to ensure adequate funds are available for operational and campaign activity, on a short and long term basis
  • Work with Chair, Finance Director, and Executive Committee to develop and implement a fundraising plan which should include sustaining donor programs, low and high dollar events, call-time programs, direct mail, and digital solicitation
  • Work with compliance staff to ensure all contributions and expenses are in compliance with all applicable state and federal laws, and to ensure all campaign finance reports, tax returns, and any other required reports are accurately and timely filed

Staff and Operations

  • Assess staff needs and interview applicants; make hiring recommendations to the Chair
  • Train and supervise all staff on a daily basis, to include a review of staff functions and a restructuring of job responsibilities as needed
  • Manage personnel matters, conduct performance reviews, and handle any matters of intra-office discord
  • In coordination with the Chair and Executive Committee, organize logistics for all statewide meetings, conventions, and other gatherings
  • In coordination with state party staff, ensure proper maintenance of all office technology and databases; appropriately store, archive, and dispose of party files

Party Building

  • In coordination with state chair, local party officers, and legislative leaders, recruit candidates for local, legislative, and statewide office
  • Develop, strengthen, and grow the grassroots volunteer network and leaders of the Dem-NPL
  • Develop and maintain relationships with party leaders, donors, elected officials, key constituencies, and all stakeholders of the Dem-NPL
  • Organize training opportunities for candidates, staff, and volunteers
  • Attend all national party meetings, including ASDC and DNC meetings; maintain relationships with national and regional partners

Communications

  • Work with Communications Director, state chair, and legislative leaders to develop and implement a comprehensive, proactive communications plan aimed at advancing the goals, values, and principles of the Dem-NPL
  • Work with Communications Director to develop values-based and strategic messaging; speak publicly on relevant and timely issues; and present the Dem-NPL in a positive, professional light across the state
  • Oversee communications activity, including press releases, press conferences and other media interactions, and development and maintenance of a website and social media presence
  • Work with Communications Director and legislative leaders to appropriately and competently respond to Republican legislation, policies, activities, and statements

Campaign Strategy and Management

  • Work with stakeholders to develop and implement a campaign and field strategy for local, legislative, and statewide races
  • Work with stakeholders to develop a GOTV program and ensure it is executed successfully during each campaign cycle
  • Explore continued expansion into work with local, non-partisan races
  • Work with stakeholders, including tribal leaders, to develop and oversee a voter protection program to ensure all eligible voters have access to the polls

Preferred Experience and Competencies

  • Experience working in a management position, preferably with a political party or similarly situated organization
  • Experience fundraising and maintaining donor relations
  • Excellent people and customer service skills, with the ability to exhibit patience, professionalism, and diplomacy, even in stressful and demanding situations
  • Direct campaign experience, at any level, which contributes to an understanding of best practices in field, fundraising, compliance, communications, and other job responsibilities
  • Proficiency in grassroots organizing and voter contact in the context of a conservative, rural state and with key Democratic constituencies
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and media experience
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, legislative leaders, the executive and policy committees, partner organizations, local party leaders, and other stakeholders
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously
