What happened today in the ND legislature?

Sen. Mike Wobbema's (R-24) bill (SB 2303) which would have established an education savings account program (think a school voucher program) was defeated in the Senate! The House defeated two yesterday, but passed one (HB 1540) sponsored by Rep. Ben Koppelman (R-16). His bill would push $71 million of public taxpayer dollars to private and home school students through an education savings account. Sen. Michelle Axtman (R-7) also has a bill (SB 2400) that would put $102.5 million of public taxpayer dollars to ESAs.

The House blocked Rep. SuAnn Olson's (R-8) bill (HB 1456) which would have codified allowing chaplains in public schools. Aimee Copas of North Dakota Council of Educational Leaders testified, "House Bill 1456 presents significant constitutional, practical, and ethical concerns, particularly regarding church-state separation, lack of licensing requirements, and potential legal liability issues." It is clear that some in the NDGOP want to implant Christian Nationalism into our laws–whether it's very obvious like Rep. Nico Rios' (R-23) bill to "acknowledge the Kingship of Jesus Christ" or this more creeping attempt.

What's coming up?

Rep. Lori VanWinkle (R-3) will present HCR 3021 which seeks to remove “all civil or criminal judicial immunity for members of the judiciary, renders any judgment in violation of due process, state or federal law, or the Constitution of North Dakota or the Constitution of the United States void, and requires each judicial vacancy in the supreme court or district court to be filled through appointment by a bipartisan committee.”

Rep. Bill Tviet (R-33) will present HCR 3013 which would urge the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn marriage equality. It specifically says they will “leave unaddressed the natural definition of marriage as a union between one man, a biological male, and one woman, a biological female”

Democratic-NPL Bills

Monday, February 17
Rep. Liz Conmy (D-11) will present HB 1596 which would reduce the penalty for possessing small amounts of marijuana from an infraction to a noncriminal citation.

With federal funds again on chopping block, UND's research community holds its breath

Researchers and administrators at the University of North Dakota remain on edge this week as yet another federal decree threatens to disrupt millions of dollars in medical research funding.

A federal judge on Monday temporarily blocked an order making deep cuts to federal grant funding for universities, medical centers and other research institutions, including North Dakota’s two research universities.

Letter: We're making kids cry

These kids' lives aren’t getting better when all we do is make it worse for them, and every day what little help there is dwindles. Look, North Dakota has some great dads and proud moms, but what will it take to see these LGBTQ+ kids as your own and help them against bullies and big government? Because they’re not scary. They’re real. They need help. They’re often dorks and amazing…. and absolutely terrified right now. And we’re not helping anyone with this stuff, we’re just making kids cry.

Twenty red states back DOGE in lawsuit challenging access to Treasury system

Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird led a group of 20 states including North Dakota filing a brief in support of President Donald Trump’s administration and Elon Musk amid lawsuits challenging the constitutionality of actions taken by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) task force.
The brief was filed in a case brought by Democratic attorneys general challenging access by Musk and DOGE employees to personal information through the U.S. Treasury payment system. A federal judge in Southern District of New York granted a temporary restraining order in the case, blocking Musk and DOGE employees from accessing the information and destroying records already obtained.

North Dakota resolution seeks to recognize 'the Kingship of Jesus Christ'

“Testimony during the hearing of HCR 3020 included views that are common in Christian national rhetoric that assume our country was founded as a Christian nation,” ACLU lobbyist Cody Schuler told the Tribune.
“It is troubling to hear floor speeches where lawmakers use their faith to judge and condemn citizens who may not share their world view, even going so far as to blame the medical conditions of some people on their perception of societal sin. Lawmakers are supposed to work to make life better for citizens, not sit in judgment and condemnation,” he said. “Christian nationalism is a valid view people are free to hold, but to legislate it is incompatible with constitutional protections of religious freedom and equality under the law.”

Trump’s White House Ramps up Its Dangerous War on the AP

The Trump administration on Friday booted the Associated Press from the Oval Office and Air Force One, citing the newswire’s choice to continue referring to the recently renamed “Gulf of America” as the “Gulf of Mexico.”
“The Associated Press continues to ignore the lawful geographic name change of the Gulf of America,” wrote White House deputy chief of staff Taylor Budowich on X. “This decision is not just divisive, but it also exposes the Associated Press’ commitment to misinformation.”

Trump and Elon Musk Talk DOGE In Bizarre Oval Office Press Conference

Elon Musk holds a rambling Oval Office press conference and admits that he and DOGE will make mistakes as they rampage through our government, even as congressional Republicans move forward with a budget that promises massive cuts to healthcare, education, and food assistance to pay for Trump's tax cuts for billionaires. Jon and Dan discuss whether Musk's antics could undermine Trump's agenda, what the Senate's confirmation of RFK Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard means for the GOP, and the White House's attacks on the press. Then, they debut a new segment: "Wait, Did That Really Happen?," featuring this week's most absurd scenes. Later, Lovett sits down with Rohit Chopra, recently forced out as Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, to discuss why Trump and Musk are so determined to shut down the CFPB, and what it means for the rest of us.

Trump’s pick for education chief sketches a roadmap for dismantling the department

Democrats repeatedly grilled McMahon on her willingness to follow orders from Trump or Elon Musk even if they run afoul of congressional mandates. The issue could come to a head as Trump looks to slash department spending, much of which is ordered by Congress. McMahon played down the work of Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, calling its work nothing more than an “audit,” but she also pledged to uphold the law and show deference to Congress.

The Century Club supports our year-round work to build party infrastructure supporting candidate recruitment, local district and regional leadership, issue-based education, and tools for Dem-NPL success.
Help us elect great Democrats up and down the ballot!
The North Dakota Democratic-NPL is launching a new grassroots program called “Neighbor to Neighbor” where volunteers will connect with voters in your community to elect Democrats up and down the ballot. As a volunteer, you will be responsible for connecting with voters in 25 homes in your neighborhood or friends and family to help elect Democrats up and down the ballot about 3-4 times this year.
Grassroots organizers are the lifeblood of the Dem-NPL! Sign up to volunteer with the Dem-NPL!
