The North Dakota Legislative Session is fast-paced and every bill gets a vote unless it's withdrawn. Are there bills you want to know more about or bills that you are following that you think should get more attention? Please let us know!

What happened today?

Last night, the ND House voted down Rep. Jeff Hoverson's (R-3) bill to force schools to post the 10 Commandments!

Rep. Jared Hendrix (R-10) presented HCR 3026 to encourage the US to annex Greenland. This bizarre resolution got a DO PASS recommendation from the committee.

Rep. Nico Rios (R-23) who is apparently signing autographs after making antisemitic comments, presented HCR 3020 which urges "North Dakota to acknowledge the Kingship of Jesus Christ."

Prairie Public Funding

After Rep. Jorin Johnson's bill to defund Prairie Public initially passed the House, it was re-referred to the House Appropriations Committee. Today, they gave it a DO NOT PASS recommendation! So soon it will come back to the House Floor for another vote! Reach out to your lawmakers, and let then know funding for Prairie Public is important to you—especially if they voted to defund it before!

These are the Representatives who voted for HB 1255 before: B. Anderson, D. Anderson, K. Anderson, Bahl, Berg, Bolinske, Bosch, Christianson, Dockter, Dressler, Fisher, Frelich, Grindberg, Grueneich, Hagert, Hauck, Headland, Heilman, Heinert, Henderson, Hendrix, Hoverson, J. Johnson, D. Johnston, Kasper, Kiefert, Koppelman, Lefor, Louser, Marschall, McLeod, Meier, Morton, Motschenbacher, Nehring, Novak, S. Olson, Osowski, Ostlie, Porter, Pyle, Rios, Rohr, D. Ruby, M. Ruby, Satrom, Schatz, Schauer, Schreiber-Beck, Steiner, Stemen, Swiontek, Toman, Tveit, VanWinkle, Vetter, Vigesaa, Vollmer, Wagner, Weisz, Wolff.

Democratic-NPL Bills

Rep. Lisa Finley-DeVille (D-4a) presented HB 1581 to fund Department of Commerce tribal tourism grants.

Sen. Kathy Hogan (D-21) presented SB 2389 to conduct a legislative management study regarding child care infrastructure.

Rep. Jayme Davis (D-9) will present HCR 3023 to affirm the Legislative Assembly’s commitment to ensuring state-funded essential services, including education, law enforcement, infrastructure, and public health remain fully funded and operational, regardless of changes in federal funding allocations

What's coming up?

Tomorrow a few bills to limit the abilities of the state executive and judicial branches will be heard.

Sen. Todd Beard (R-23) has a bill (SB 2258) to have an agency specifically reference what statute or rule providing the authority upon which the agency's action is based.

Sen. Jose Castaneda (R-40) has a bill (SB 2349) as does Sen. Claire Cory (R-42) (SB 2215) to limit the introduction of legislative bills prepared by executive branch agencies and the judicial branch.

House defeats bill to display Ten Commandments in North Dakota public schools, colleges

Rep. Jayme Davis, D-Rolette, said the bill sends a message that people of Jewish, Muslim or other faiths are secondary in the eyes of public schools and state government.
She fought back tears on the House floor as she described the experience of Indigenous people required to attend boarding schools that forced them to abandon their spiritual beliefs.

“Many were subject to the very same doctrine this bill seeks to impose on public institutions,” Davis said.

State, district Republicans call out Williston lawmaker for post on President of Mexico

On Feb. 3, Adam Goldwyn, chair of the North Dakota Democratic-NPL Party, called Rios a ‘law-breaker’ and a ‘bigot,’ adding, in part:
“As a Jew myself, I’m not personally hurt by Nico Rios’ bigoted comments about Mexico’s Jewish President. ... Time after time after time he shows us that he does not believe in North Dakota values of individual liberty, loving your neighbors, or the rule of law.”

David Ronderros, a biology professor at the University of Mary and a self-described devout Christian, said evolution is accepted by many people of faith.
"Pitting faith against science and depicting God as a competitor against natural causes rather than their author. This bill could lead to many students rejecting either faith or science," Ronderros said.

US Farmers Say Trump Let Them Down With Spending Freeze

"I'm very concerned about the security of our farms," 44-year-old Elisa Lane, who owns and runs a farm producing fruit and cut flowers in the US state of Maryland, told AFP on Monday.
Lane was awarded $30,000 by USDA last summer to subsidize a roughly $70,000 solar panel installation on her 15-acre farm.
