Letter: It's a great year to become politically engaged

During the legislative session, a legislator can be reached by email or leaving a message with the legislative telephone message center at 888-635-3447 or 701-328-3373. Address only one issue in each contact. Keep your contact brief and on topic. Always identify specifically what legislation you are addressing (e.g. HB 1224 or SB 2254).

Women You Should Know: Erin Oban, State Director, USDA Rural Development

One of Erin’s priorities is making government accessible to people from all backgrounds. She believes that better conversations happen when diverse perspectives are included. During her time in the Senate, she was often praised for her ability to explain complex issues in terms everyone could understand. Erin has a unique talent for translating technical language into digestible bits of information. “If you bring in a different perspective, conversations change,” she said.

Free school lunch advocates call on Legislature to act

“I’m excited that there’s a group of grassroots supporters out there really driving this conversation,” said Ista, who serves as House minority leader. “We’re hearing from parents, teachers, nutritionists, health care professionals and workers that this is a top priority for them and they see states across the country implementing this.”

Trump Is About to Betray His Rural Supporters

Agricultural producers could face worse losses than any other economic sector from Trump’s plans to impose sweeping tariffs on imports and to undertake what he frequently has called “the largest domestic deportation operation” of undocumented immigrants “in American history.” Hospitals and other health providers in rural areas could face the greatest strain from proposals Trump has embraced to slash spending on Medicaid, which provides coverage to a greater share of adults in smaller communities than in large metropolitan areas.

CFPB alleges 3 top U.S. banks failed to protect consumers from Zelle fraud

"The nation's largest banks felt threatened by competing payment apps, so they rushed to put out Zelle," said CFPB Director Rohit Chopra in a statement. "By their failing to put in place proper safeguards, Zelle became a gold mine for fraudsters, while often leaving victims to fend for themselves."

Musk Makes a Mess of Congress

Over the course of a few hours yesterday, Musk may have single-handedly tanked a carefully negotiated bipartisan compromise to fund the government for the next three months and provide billions of dollars in aid for disaster relief and farmers. The deal was the work of House Speaker Mike Johnson, who, like Musk, is (er, has been) a close ally of President-Elect Donald Trump. To secure support from Democrats—who still hold the Senate for another few weeks—Johnson agreed to add a host of unrelated provisions, including a long-sought but politically dicey pay raise for lawmakers.

Trump’s for-profit presidency

Trump made an ethics pledge for a second term, but it doesn’t make any commitments in terms of how he might resolve his persistent conflicts of interest stemming from his now even more sprawling businesses. This time, there are many more ways that he could use the presidency for his own personal gain — and potentially be vulnerable to the influence of foreign actors.

“He’s essentially flouting ethics rules and conflicts of interest laws much more blatantly, much more obviously than last time,” Scherb said. “He’s not even trying to hide what he’s doing at all this time.”

WATCH: Harris tells students to ‘stay in the fight’ after election

“Many people have come up to me, telling me they feel tired, maybe even resigned,” Harris said. “Folks have said to me that they’re not sure whether they have the strength, much less the desire, to stay in the fight. But let me be very clear. No one can walk away. We must stay in the fight. Every one of us.”

Murphy, Kinzinger slam Musk for backing German ‘neo-Nazi party’

Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill), an outspoken Trump critic, slammed Musk as a “drug addled billionaire” who “thinks he runs the world.”
“Literally is a neo-Nazi party. Not even joking,” Kinzinger posted on X alongside Musk’s post.
Musk has demonstrated enormous influence with Trump since spending millions on his presidential campaign, and has played an informal role in foreign policy throughout the transition period.
