Poll: Broad support for funding child care, school lunches, affordable housing
During the last legislative session, House Bill 1491 fell short of passing by one vote in the state Senate after passing the House. That bill would have provided free lunches for children from families at 200% of the federal poverty level — comparable to a family of three making around $60,000 at the time — and would have cost $6 million over the two years it was funded.

McFeely: Losing Tony Bender's voice in the wilderness
But it was his role as a voice in the wilderness that cannot be overstated. You're going to have to trust me on this, but it takes a little bit of guts to write unpopular things and share them publicly among those who declare them unpopular. There are many, many people in positions of power who are afraid to voice an opinion or take a stance that might garner an email or phone call or cost them a vote. Tony was not in a position of such power, but he was fearless.

Elon Musk Keeps Unleashing His Crazed Followers on Government Workers
One target of Musk’s posting spree last week was a woman who works at the International Development Finance Corporation. Her role, an official told The Wall Street Journal, involves “identifying innovations that serve U.S. strategic interests, including bolstering agriculture and infrastructure against extreme weather events.” She had her job deemed “fake” by Musk—seemingly because her title, “Director of Climate Diversification,” contains words that tend to raise right-wing culture-warrior hackles.

A Super-PAC Backing RFK Offers Paid Access to Him at Mar-a-Lago
The price of enjoying Kennedy’s company at the fundraiser, set to take place on the Trump-owned club’s Lakeview Terrace, is $25,000 each, or $40,000 for a couple. Experts on federal election law say that such a bald exchange—a large donation in exchange for access to a powerful incoming government official—is technically legal, but ethically ill-advised.

Trump’s win is part of a mysterious — and ominous — worldwide trend
We — those who believe in the liberal democratic political order, imperfect as it is — are still missing something. And we better figure out what before voters throw the baby out with the bathwater by elevating politicians who stick it to the old elite by wrecking the parts of the system that are actually working.

Mexico’s president warns Trump over threat to institute crippling tariffs
During a news conference, Sheinbaum read from a letter she said she planned to send to Trump, in which she warns that Mexico will retaliate with tariffs targeting U.S. imports if he follows through. Per The Washington Post, the U.S. conducts more trade with Mexico than any other country, importing $475 billion in goods from Mexico last year and exporting almost $323 billion. So Sheinbaum’s warning basically amounted to: “You don’t want these problems.”
