North Dakota’s likely next governor would regulate his own industry, testing ethics guardrails

“That’s not just an apparent conflict of interest, that’s a real conflict of interest,” said Dennis Cooley, director of the Northern Plains Ethics Institute at North Dakota State University. “Anything that touches on ‘I’m giving you money for this,’ even with the best intentions, and that’s what I’m assuming these folks have, these representatives have, it’s really hard to separate yourself from folks who pay you.”

4 major takeaways from North Dakota governor debate

Piepkorn said the state should increase its funding commitments for public education before any extra funding is allocated for a school choice program.

“Taking money away, right now, from public education for vouchers, any money you take and send in that direction, is going to mean less money for the public education we have now,” Piepkorn said.

Former North Dakota Sen. Ray Holmberg continued to violate release conditions after guilty plea, report says

At that time, North Dakota Democratic-NPL Chair Adam Goldwyn issued a statement calling Holmberg’s actions “disgusting and heinous.” He issued a similar statement Friday.

“At this point I’m repeating myself. What Ray Holmberg did was disgusting and heinous," Goldwyn wrote Friday. "It’s a betrayal of our nation’s promise to protect its children that Holmberg is still gallivanting about Grand Forks as if nothing happened. That he traveled to Prague to rape children on the tax-payers’ dime is a betrayal to every North Dakotan. Why must we put up with this added insult?”

Documenting Loss: Key to Disaster Assistance

The Farm Service Agency has many disaster programs set up for those farmers and ranchers affected by the fires in North Dakota. Correct documentation is vital to ensure you can utilize the assistance programs. “A picture is worth a thousand words so before you start fixing fences, take a picture of what that burned-up fence looked like first,” said Marcy Svenningsen, executive director, North Dakota State FSA.

Piepkorn and Armstrong disagreed on whether binary triggers should be banned. The trigger, which North Dakota lawmakers wrote into law in 2019, was used in an ambush on Fargo police officers in July 2023.

The assault killed one officer and injured two others.

Piepkorn said he was told the trigger was legalized for people who enjoy sports shooting.

“Why do you need a trigger like this?” he said, comparing it to a bump stock. “It isn’t necessary. It is harmful.”

Port: Why this conservative voted for Kamala Harris

Only the timeline doesn't work. In March of 2016, back in my blogging days, I wrote this about Trump: "He’s an embarrassment. He is not fit to lead our country."

That's how I felt then. That's how I feel now.

Many Republicans also feel that way. I talk to them. You'd recognize many of their names. I suspect that when they're alone with their ballots and consciences, they'll make the same choice I have, even if they won't talk about it publicly.

Port: The wildfires are a devastating argument against Measure 4

In western North Dakota, devastating wildfires, driven by high winds, took life, destroyed property and scorched tens of thousands of acres of ranch, farm and wilderness land. Dozens of state and federal agencies responded, including numerous fire departments.

Meanwhile, Measure 4, a constitutional amendment that would eliminate taxes on property values and upend how our state supports its fire protection and other first responder services, is on our ballots. If passed, it would eliminate billions in tax revenues, a not insignificant portion of which goes to firefighters, ambulance crews and sheriff's departments.

District 42 House candidates offer remedies to North Dakota's workforce crunch

One of North Dakota’s biggest legislative concerns is the state of public education. Underfunding, teacher shortages, and a lack of support for essential school staff – such as paraprofessionals and support staff – are having a detrimental impact on the quality of education. We must increase funding for public education to ensure that not only teachers but also paraprofessionals and support staff receive fair wages and the resources they need to help students thrive. These professionals play a crucial role in the daily functioning of our schools, and their contributions must be valued.

Vice President Kamala Harris on Her Race to the Finish

Harris’s speech was different, and announced a new era. “The middle class is where I come from,” she declared, and ran through her résumé not as a meteoric leader but as a worker, a woman who commuted and did her best. “I stood proudly before a judge, and I said five words: Kamala Harris, for the people.” No mystique, sure, but also no mystery: no smoke, no mirrors, no soaring ideals, no Icarian ascents. She was the wonder with her feet on solid ground—as speakers at the convention kept underscoring, “one of us.”

Harris’ Medicare proposal could transform long-term care for the middle class

Polling from AARP shows that over half of Americans believe that Medicare already covers long-term nursing home care or a home health aide. It does not, and many Americans are shocked to learn that when they need that kind of help for themselves or family members, it is not available except under specific and punishing circumstances.

Currently, long-term care for people with disabilities and older adults is mostly paid for by Medicaid, a poverty program that requires recipients to have no more than $2,000 in their bank account at any given time, among other restrictions. Middle-class older adults who need intensive long-term care and who cannot pay hundreds of thousands out of pocket engage in what experts call a “Medicaid spend down.” Essentially, older adults have to sell off their possessions, empty their bank accounts and impoverish themselves in order to qualify for life-sustaining assistance with tasks like eating, using the bathroom and getting out of bed in the morning.
