Trygve Hammer hopes to represent North Dakota in the U.S. House
Trygve Hammer has served in the military, worked on the oilfield rigs, and taught North Dakota students as a 7-12th grades science teacher, and now he’s running to represent North Dakota in Congress. He joins Joel Heitkamp in the KFGO studio to talk about his campaign. They cover everything from the recent primary election, to his opinion on the Supreme Court, to availability with constituents, and much more!
|
|
|
Trygve Hammer says he feels good, but there’s still lots to do after primary win
According to the latest campaign filings with the Federal Election Commission, Hammer has raised $387,874.22 campaigning and all but $5,000 of it has come from individual contributions. The $5,000 in committee contributions came from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers political action committee. IBEW is the union that represents workers across utilities, railroads, telecommunications and construction and has endorsed Hammer.

Coalition opposing property tax ballot measure urges voters to ‘keep it local’
“North Dakotans understand we cannot fund our emergency services, like fire and police, and schools and libraries on hopes and talking points,” said Chad Oban, chair of the Keep It Local coalition.
|
Oban said the coalition expects the property tax initiative’s sponsoring committee will soon submit the more than 31,000 signatures required to get the measure on the November ballot. The group plans to emphasize keeping control of government spending local as it works to defeat the measure.
|
“North Dakotans know that if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is,” said Oban, who also is executive director of public employee union North Dakota United.

Pride Pioneer: Gay Pride Has North Dakota Roots
The man behind the pie was 27-year-old Thom Higgins, gay rights activist and former University of North Dakota student. Higgins’ early life was in Wisconsin and Minnesota, but a decade before his infamous pieing, he was attending Catholic high school at Assumption Abby in Richardton, N.D., eventually enrolling in the University of North Dakota as part of a gifted student program. Excelling as a student journalist, Higgins got involved in the production of an underground newspaper called the Snow Job, which led to his suspension from the university. Following his 1968 suspension, rather than returning to UND, he moved to the Twin Cities and became a notable gay activist.

Unicorns, Leprechauns, and Post-Birth Abortions: How False Narratives Are Used to Justify Oppressive Policies
It seems Julie Fedorchak wants voters to believe pro-choice, pro-family folks are straight-up murderers. What is the incentive to conjure up figments like “post-birth abortion”? It’s an effective diversion. After all, framing the other camp as killers certainly makes Julie’s draconian position seem more palatable. But let’s be clear: it’s campaigns like hers with their liberty-crushing agenda peddling extremism. She’s distorting the truth to hide how radical their stance is, twisting reality to push an agenda of stripping away your freedoms. The real extremists are those who fabricate insane scenarios to justify their own oppressive policies.

Bender: The most important election of our lives again
Trump's building another team of mobsters. Biden has an administration of smart, able people, the ones that do most of the work.

Wealthy Republicans are selling out because the Trump tax cuts for the wealthy expire next year. Democracy isn't a concern for billionaires. Money knows how to navigate authoritarianism.

McFeely: Doug Burgum says U.S. 'a dictatorship' with Biden as president
Doug Burgum has jumped the shark.

In his unending and shameless pursuit of being Donald Trump's running mate on the Republican presidential ticket, the North Dakota governor Wednesday entered territory even his most cynical critics didn't think he'd go.

Hope this helps
We know you said on Meet the Press that Donald Trump is not someone you’d want to do business with. But why did you tell us on KFGO that you wouldn’t run with Donald Trump in 2024? It’s pretty clear you didn’t want the job then that you’re now anxiously applying for. You’ve spent thousands, possibly millions of dollars for it now. What is it about a man you didn’t have respect for, that now makes you adore him?

Birth control, IVF and SCOTUS: Democrats target GOP vulnerabilities

Comparing Trump’s Haphazard $2,500 Tax Increase to Biden’s Targeted Tariffs
The Biden administration has taken a nuanced, targeted approach to handling the challenge that China’s nonmarket practices present. It is no secret that the U.S. relationship with China will be one of this generation’s defining foreign and economic policy challenges. There are few historical parallels of great powers as deeply integrated as the United States and China. But that economic integration—both bilaterally and through third-country markets—means that rash, imprecise actions that may sound forceful on the campaign trail are likely to result in collateral damage that could be avoided with more sophisticated, targeted actions.

U.S. goes after Mexican cartel leaders' drug profits in fight against fentanyl
The measures are part of a widening Biden administration effort aimed at targeting the finances of Mexican drug gangs as well as Chinese individuals and companies that narcotics experts say form the black market global supply chain for fentanyl.

"The Treasury Department has a unique ability to degrade and disrupt their operations," Yellen said Thursday during a trip to Atlanta. According to Yellen, sanctions have already been placed on more than 250 targets worldwide, with the goal of weakening "drug trafficking organizations, their enablers and their financial facilitators."

Donald Trump’s Get-Out-The-Vote Plan is Bonkers
“The prevailing wisdom of the consultant class before was, ‘Let’s go to those swing districts and really try and move those voters.’ Well, we don’t agree,” one source familiar with the plans told CNN. “We’re going where the Republicans are. We’re going to drive up [the] score in those areas and get the people that stayed home in 2020 or 2022.”
|
This is the logic Turning Point used in 2022 when it struck out in all the major Arizona races. But it’s a comfortable strategy for Trump to accept because he need not woo swing voters.
|
In some progressive circles, base-only strategies have been trendy in recent years. But Democratic leaders have largely eschewed such insular thinking and kept courting swing voters, which paid off in 2018, 2020, and 2022.

Biden announces new policy shielding undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens from deportation
Biden "believes that securing the border is essential," it said in a press release outlining the new action Tuesday.

"He also believes in expanding lawful pathways and keeping families together, and that immigrants who have been in the United States for decades, paying taxes and contributing to their communities, are part of the social fabric of our country," the statement said.

US supreme court upholds ban on domestic abusers possessing guns
La’Shea Cretain, a fellow with Everytown for Gun Safety who was herself shot by her former boyfriend in front of her young children and recovered from a coma, said the Rahimi ruling “means fewer children will witness their mothers, sisters, aunts and friends experience gun violence at the hands of abusers, like mine did”.

With the Supreme Court's help, Republicans' plan to resurrect "zombie laws"
The Comstock Act is what's known as a "zombie law" which is a law that has been neutered by subsequent High Court decisions that have found a constitutional prohibition against enforcing them but remain on the books sometimes for centuries lurking around like the undead (hence the name) waiting for a chance to be reanimated by the Supreme Court overturning one of its own decisions. There are a lot of them as we just saw in several states that had draconian 19th-century laws go into effect when the Court handed down its Dobbs decision.
