North Dakota first lady Kathryn Burgum's election ballot rejected
The North Dakota first lady’s ballot was thrown out last month after election authorities determined the signature on her absentee application didn’t match the one on her mail-in ballot envelope.
|
The Secretary of State absentee tracker website shows the June 11 primary election ballot of Kathryn Helgaas, also known as Kathryn Burgum, was rejected because the “signatures do not match.” Helgaas married Doug Burgum in late 2016 after he was elected North Dakota governor for his first term. She uses the name Kathryn Burgum.

Port: Don't treat North Dakota's elections as though they're over
In District 10, Jared Hendrix, one of the ringleaders of the ultra-right-wing populist faction of the NDGOP, is running for the state House against Democratic incumbent Hamida Dakane, who has earned a solid reputation with colleagues from both parties during her first term. Rep. Steve Swiontek, a moderate incumbent Republican, is also running but is refusing to campaign with Hendrix.

Apathy, Arrogance, and American Oligarchs
They underestimate us. We are not their sheep. The revolution to remake America into an oligarchy isn’t over, but it makes sense that Kevin Roberts is feeling pretty good about his odds right now. I am running as the antidote to that arrogance. My Scandinavian heritage meant being raised on a diet of lutefisk, humility, and egalitarian values. If we act decisively and collectively, we can do so much. We can stop organizations like the Heritage Foundation that want to control all aspects of America and its citizens.

McFeely: Don't lose sight of biggest thing — defeating Trump
The Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper had it right in calling for Trump, not Biden, to exit the race.
|
"To build himself up, Trump constantly tears the country down," the newspaper editorial offered. "There is no shining city on the hill. It’s just mourning in America.

Speaking out: Child care is an important issue for families
Last legislative session, North Dakota Democratic-NPL lawmakers introduced bills addressing child care needs, with some of their proposals passing in a separate legislative effort. I am hopeful the next session brings about more legislation to meet the demands of families and child care providers.

Grand Forks lawmaker settles DUI case, pleads guilty to reckless driving
On May 7, Cory was driving near the intersection of Gateway Drive and Columbia Road in Grand Forks when a local police officer pulled her over, according to an arrest citation. A breath test showed Cory’s blood alcohol content was 0.168%, twice the legal limit for driving, the citation says.
|
As part of the agreement with prosecutors, Cory signed a statement admitting to driving recklessly “with disregard for the right or safety of others in a manner that would likely endanger a person.”

Doug Burgum’s Rebranding: ‘He’s Playing the Game Now’
But I did see Burgum the next morning. He was on my hotel television. Burgum was still in Manhattan and called the Trump proceedings a “sham trial” and denounced the jury. “If those 12 voted for president today, it would be 12 for Biden and zero for President Trump,” said Burgum, without any attempt at supporting evidence. Burgum’s brand once represented intelligence and creativity but now seemed indistinguishable from Ramaswamy or the others defending Trump on cable news.

‘Some folks need killing’: North Carolina Lt. Gov takes Christian nationalism to dangerous low
Trump wanted to shoot racial justice protesters in the wake of the police murder of George Floyd in 2020. Robinson, who could be North Carolina’s next governor, wants to get “the guys in green” or the “boys in blue” to “handle” unspecified “wicked people.” It’s all part of the MAGA quest to upend democracy and replace it with far-right authoritarianism. Robinson is merely taking the lead on turning this project into a twisted Sunday school lesson for Christian nationalists.

What is Project 2025?

IRS collects milestone $1 billion in back taxes from high-wealth taxpayers

Trump’s ‘national conservative’ allies plot a revenge administration
“Trump comes back in January, I’ll be on his heels coming back, and I will run the biggest deportation force this country has ever seen,” said former ICE director Tom Homan at a panel on immigration policy. “They ain’t seen shit yet. Wait until 2025.”

Project 2025’s ‘unhinged’ wish list: Criminalize porn, ban birth control
Project 2025 is a “wish list of a bunch of fringe, far-right policy proposals that I think many voters would be really horrified to learn about,” says Chris Hayes. For example, the agenda says, "Pornography should be outlawed,” and “the people who produce and distribute it should be imprisoned."

DONALD TRUMP IS UNFIT TO LEAD
Election Day is less than four months away. The case against Mr. Trump is extensive, and this board urges Americans to perform a simple act of civic duty in an election year: Listen to what Mr. Trump is saying, pay attention to what he did as president and allow yourself to truly inhabit what he has promised to do if returned to office.

Why Josh Hawley’s ahistorical ‘Christian nation’ nonsense matters
Just as outrageous is the sentiment behind the rhetoric: Those who espouse the idea that the United States is a “Christian nation” appear eager to tell everyone else, “You’ll be tolerated, but you’re still The Other, relegated to second-class status.” It’s a sentiment at odds with our highest ideals, though Hawley doesn’t seem to care.
