Dozens rally in Grand Forks for abortion rights on second anniversary of Roe v. Wade being overturned

"(It's been) two years since the Supreme Court did what many of us knew intellectually they might do — but in our guts, in our hearts, in our souls never thought they would do — and that's roll back rights," District 43 state Rep. Zac Ista, D-Grand Forks, said during his rally speech. "They took away fundamental rights that had been enshrined in our constitution for generations, and now here we are, two years later, fighting to get those rights back."

Letter: Recent stories suggest ND is not safe for women

Another news story running simultaneously covered the divorce filing of the wife of expelled North Dakota Rep. Luke Simons , citing years of abuse toward her and their children. Simons was expelled from the Legislature in 2021 as a result of widespread harassment of women at the Capitol. The fact that 25 other legislators voted against expelling him indicates that there is still much work to be done to prioritize making sure that North Dakota is a safe place for women (and children!) to call home, and that tragic endings like Jody’s are prevented.

North Dakota gets some domestic fertilizer production grant money

It’s funded through the American Rescue Plan Act. Erin Oban, state director for USDA rural development, said the program should help the elevator provide more fertilizer to farmers in Williams, Burke, McKenzie, Mountrail and surrounding counties.

“We have a lot of producers up in that corner of the state and their ability to expand their production by more than 60% of what they’re currently providing will make a big difference hopefully in bringing down some fertilizer prices and keeping our farmers profitable,” said Oban

Letter: Give young people a reason to stay in ND

This state clearly discourages our young people from staying here. More hate legislation was passed last year in Bismarck than ever. If you look at our current government, and believe that ALL children learn better if they have lunch, you may choose to leave ND.

Tribune editorial: Harsher laws no guarantee of less crime

The Tribune Editorial Board isn’t convinced mandatory sentences will solve the problem. Taking away the chance of parole also takes away motivation to reform and live a clean life. Some inmates need to serve their full sentence; parole shouldn’t be automatic. But we shouldn’t take away the discretion of judges and parole boards.

North Dakota state prisons reached their capacity of 1,624 male inmates last July. The North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is shifting more inmates to county jails to address overcrowding. The department also said the overcrowding problem could have been a lot worse without the help of transition programs to help inmates find adequate employment, housing and transportation.

Biden bounces back from bad debate with energetic Raleigh rally

He hammered Trump as an extremist on abortion rights and a threat to the future of American democracy if elected again. Using a teleprompter and feeding off the energy of the crowd, he attacked his opponent in ways that were missing from the debate stage.
"That is what is at stake in America this election: your freedom, your democracy, America itself is at stake," he said.

Trump Lied...

“Now getting some backup from a Republican, former Congressman Adam Kinzinger is now officially endorsing [President Biden]. … Kinzinger has been a vocal critic of the former president. He said while he doesn't agree with President Biden on everything, and as a life-long conservative he never thought he would see himself endorsing a Democrat, but he said the stakes are simply too high in this race saying he is backing Biden because of his, quote, unwavering support for democracy.”

Compete in EVERY Race: Two Under-the-Radar WINNABLE Senate races Florida & North Dakota

To keep democracy’s head above water in 2024 the Democrats need what’s called a trifecta - meaning the Presidency, the House and the Senate - and keeping the senate is going to be a tough slog because Democrats have what’s called a “bad map”. So today, instead of talking about the must win swing races we hear about all the time, we’re going to discuss two Senate races that almost no-one is paying attention to. Two Senate races practically no-one is investing in, because it’s assumed they’ve already been won by Republicans when the truth is they haven’t. American Democrats often function in this weird defeatist culture where we keep fighting over the same 6 states and seeding other states to Republicans with the assumption they’re lost and no Democrat can ever win there. It’s not fair to the people who have different opinions in those states. It’s not fair to the people who lose their rights thanks to Republican policies, and it’s not democratic. People should have a candidate to vote for, and that candidate should have the opportunity to win. So today’s episode includes two women, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (or DMP) from Florida and Katrina Christiansen from North Dakota. We’re going to hear their stories and remind ourselves that no state should be written off. That everybody deserves a chance to be represented in America and with so much on the line, we need to support every Democrat running. The party might not be focusing on these two races, but We the People, should be.

Conservative US lawmakers are pushing for an end to no-fault divorce

On the increase in divorces, Vance said in 2021: “One of the great tricks that I think the sexual revolution pulled on the American populace” is the idea that “these marriages were fundamentally, you know, they were maybe even violent, but certainly they were unhappy, and so getting rid of them and making it easier for people to shift spouses like they change their underwear, that’s going to make people happier in the long term”.

Trump’s Shameless, Corrupt Wooing of Plutocrats Is Suddenly Backfiring

To be sure, we shouldn’t be sanguine about where corporate support for Trump will end up. If those who do fear Trump will sabotage U.S. democracy don’t ever make this public, it will do little good. Conversely, corporate leaders who profess confidence that democracy will hold under Trump—or say they fear retaliation—might be just giving themselves cover to stick with Trump and take a position motivated by what (they think) benefits their bottom lines.

"Power grab": Supreme Court guts agency power, posing "devastating" environmental risks

"Something very sinister is afoot here," United for Democracy's senior adviser Meagan Hatcher-Mays said. United for Democracy is an activist organization that specifically focuses on studying Supreme Court cases. "Look, this is a gift to the Koch network. This is a gift to Harlan Crow and Leonard Leo and all of these people who are paying for the justices to go on private jets and to sail on yachts to Bali. These same people who are paying Clarence Thomas's relatives' school tuition, these are the same people who want Chevron deference to be overturned. This decision today is a gift to those benefactors."
