North Dakota legislators respond to planned Minnesota Day of Solidarity

Rep. Foss, who represents District 44, said he stands with Minnesotans during these difficult times and called for less aggressive tactics by federal authorities.

“Our goal is to let Minnesotans know that they’re not alone in this struggle and that there are people within governments, especially state governments, that stand with them in solidarity during this difficult time,” Foss said. “We stand with Minnesota and its state legislature. Minnesota deserves to govern itself the way it wants, and the temperature needs to be lowered. These tactics are not what we need.”

She is a tenacious champion of affordable and accessible health care services and stronger public health policies. Gretchen’s voice on these issues will be sorely missed in the legislature, along with her constant smile, kind words and good humor.”

Conrad: My statement on the events in Minneapolis on Jan. 27

We are witnessing masked federal agents attacking, violently shoving, kicking and in some cases shooting and killing American citizens. That has to stop. It is wrong. It is unAmerican.

In the past, I have had respect for Doug Burgum, John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer. I worked with them. But their complete failure to stand up to the obvious abuse of power by the Trump administration is destroying their legacies and reputations.

If they cannot find the courage to stand against government abuse of American citizens, they should resign or be held in contempt by the judgment of history.

Port: Democratic-NPL may be getting a 2nd candidate for US House

Thompson has been an outspoken critic of first-term incumbent Rep. In an open letter published by the Democratic-NPL, Thompson took Fedorchak to task over her support for the Trump administration's tariff policies and the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, stating that while it made tax cuts for the wealthy permanent, it added $6 trillion to the deficit and cut over $1.5 trillion from Medicare and Medicaid.

McFeely: Hoeven goes all-in on regime’s propaganda, smear campaign

Hoeven did his part for the regime.
Showing no empathy for the murdered man, Hoeven blamed Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey for the chaos in the city. Then he parroted the administration’s propaganda.

“We can’t just go by what we saw on videos, on social media. We’ve got to get the facts, but in a situation where an individual appears to have approached law enforcement, intervened when they are trying to do their job, and he has a loaded handgun with them, think about that,” Hoeven said.

Hoeven, distilled: Don’t believe what you see with your own eyes, believe what the regime tells you about Pretti approaching agents with a loaded handgun.
At no point was Pretti brandishing the gun. At no point did he approach officers while brandishing the gun. An officer removed the gun from Pretti’s waist while multiple other officers pinned Pretti down. At no point does it appear Pretti was reaching for the gun. He was not a threat to the agents.

Republican Senators Spoil School Meal Bill

Assistant Senate Minority Leader Josh Boschee (D-Fargo) said, “Democratic-NPL legislators have led this fight to find school meals for many sessions. In fact, the first bill I introduced during my first session in 2013 was to fund milk or juice for elementary students during their snack break if their families couldn’t afford it. We’ll continue to fight for North Dakota kids and join the majority of North Dakotans who will pass universal school meals on the ballot in November.”

Speaking out: Legislature missed opportunity on free meals

The concept of universal free school lunches is largely popular across North Dakota based on polling. Part of the push for universal free school meals is to provide necessary relief for families struggling with the costs of living. Another main aspect of universal free school meals is to ensure all students receive nutritious meals without any stigma associated with typing in their lunch numbers. Research shows that food security allows students to thrive academically and socially.

Failure to pass HOME Program among missed opportunities in first year, Gov. Kelly Armstrong says

When asked to outline anything he saw as a missed opportunity during Armstrong’s first year, state Rep. Zac Ista, D-Grand Forks, didn’t outright point to the failure of the HOME Program, but did say “more can be done to invest in housing to lower the cost for homeowners and tenants.”
He anticipates housing will be a “major focus” when the Legislature reconvenes in 2027.

“The challenge for Gov. Armstrong and all state leaders entering 2026 and then in the 2027 legislative session will be to tackle affordability at the state level,” said Ista, the House minority leader. “I would urge Gov. Armstrong to support policies that take costs off the plates of middle class families.”

North Dakota lawmakers vote to hire outside counsel for term limits lawsuit

House Minority Leader Zac Ista of Grand Forks told Flag Family News, in a statement, that he disagreed with the legislature passing the constitutional resolution.

“Both because of the risk of a lawsuit challenging it and because it violates the voters’ desires on term limits even if a court rules the legislature acted lawfully in referring the measure to the ballot,” he said.

Ista went on to say, “Even if it is proper for the legislature to vigorously defend its position, I believe our own Legislative Council attorneys and the AG’s office have the best expertise to do so and that we don’t get much extra value from the extra cost of retaining outside counsel.”

North Dakota lawmakers to hire outside lawyers to defend state in term limits lawsuit

Ista said he feels it would be more fiscally prudent not to use outside counsel. He added that the attorneys within Legislative Council or the Attorney General’s Office would do the best job representing the Legislature’s interests, since they have expertise in North Dakota constitutional law.
Ista said he also voted against the resolution during the 2025 season, calling it a “problematic” challenge to the voter-initiated measure.
He said his gut instinct is that the Supreme Court will agree to hear the case. Even if they do, however, the justices may not find it necessary to rule in a way that clarifies the scope of the Legislature’s power, Ista added.

“It would be my hope that the court will find a way to answer the ultimate question here,” he said.

FBI’s Search of Georgia Election Center Is “Dangerous,” Experts Warn

Trump has long claimed, without evidence, that the 2020 election was stolen from him and blamed Georgia, in particular, for his loss to Joe Biden. After the election, he famously made a call pressuring the secretary of state to “find” him enough votes to win. About a week ago, in a speech at the World Economic Forum, Trump once again called the 2020 election “rigged” and promised, “People will soon be prosecuted for what they did.”

The warrant served on the Fulton County election center sought ballots, tabulator tapes, digital data and voter rolls, which it alleged might constitute “evidence of the commission of a criminal offense.” It cited stiff criminal penalties related to “the procurement, casting, or tabulation” of fraudulent ballots.

The Melania Trump Documentary Is a Disgrace

Melania the book wasn’t an autobiography so much as a highly priced brochure. Melania the movie isn’t a documentary; it’s a protection racket. It’s a reminder that the richest people in the world are investing in entertainment brands not because they care about art but because the public does, and because all of these vanity projects and capitulations are a way to consolidate their own power and fortune. It is galling to think about Jeff Bezos (whose wife is a former TV news anchor) deciding to invest so much money apparently to buy the president’s good graces while reportedly preparing to cut hundreds of jobs at The Washington Post. (Amazon reps have insisted that the company invested so heavily in the movie purely “because we think customers are going to love it.”) It is also galling—to me at least—that Apple CEO Tim Cook attended the premiere of Melania this week while the Trump administration’s militarized forces are killing Americans and detaining preschoolers. Melania Trump really doesn’t seem to care about the optics of launching her $75 million show reel while the country is in such profound crisis—that much she has always made clear. But most Americans do. And the particular details of the past week—the demonstrations and the tear gas in Minneapolis, the Melania ads covering the Sphere, the themed macarons at the White House, the scurrying-away of many who were professionally involved with this documentary—should be remembered long after the film itself is forgotten.
