Fedorchak, again, refuses to lower North Dakotans’ health care costs
North Dakota Democratic-NPL Communications Director Laura Dronen said, “North Dakotans are canceling their health care coverage because they can’t afford it. Julie Fedorchak could have prevented this health care crisis back in October, but she and House Republicans refused to extend the Affordable Care Act subsidies. This is a matter of life and death for many North Dakotans, but Fedorchak doesn’t care. She is completely failing our hard-working small business owners, farmers, and families!”

Josh Boschee launches bid for Fargo mayor, says city needs 'new direction'
“People deserve to feel safe in their homes and in their neighborhoods and throughout our community and to know their concerns are being taken seriously,” Boschee said.
Boschee said he would be a mayor for all residents. He backed proposals to set up wards to elect city leaders.
“Too many residents feel unheard by City Hall,” he said. “We won’t depend on people coming to City Hall. We will take City Hall out to the neighborhoods.”

Former law enforcement officials say traditional protocols are not being followed in ICE shooting probe
Former Moorhead Chief of Police Dave Ebinger is also surprised by the decision.
“When Kristi Noem’s comments came out [Wednesday], it just gobsmacked me,” Ebinger said. “This is a new approach. This is not what’s worked in the past.”
Ebinger worked extensively with the BCA and has nothing but praise for the agency.
“It’s just a top-notch operation. To have them involved, and to have the caliber of leadership that’s involved with public safety – I think it’d set a lot of people’s minds at ease,” Ebinger said.

Former Congressman Riggleman shares his expertise on the capture of Venezuelan President, Nicolás Maduro
Joel Heitkamp is joined by former Congressman Denver Riggleman for a conversation on the unexpected US military operation that led to the capture of the Venezuelan President, Nicolás Maduro.
Mr. Riggleman previously served in the U.S. Congress, as a Republican representing the 5th District of Virginia and as Senior Technical Adviser to the January 6th Select Committee. His national security background includes serving as an intelligence officer for the USAF where he deployed for multiple operations including directly after 9/11 with the 34th Bomb Squadron.

Port: North Dakota first, please
Trump has explicitly said that one of the reasons he grabbed power in Venezuela was the oil. You might consider that North Dakota is in the oil business, too, and Venezuela is a competitor. Given how much our state's budget, and economic well-being, is reliant on the oil industry, seeing the international markets flooded with oil from a Venezuela unshackled from the Maduro regime's incompetence and malfeasance could be devastating.
Perhaps something, along with considerations about the separation of power, that should have given our congressional delegation pause on their way to cheer on President Trump's most recent abuse of executive power.
Though, in fairness to the delegation, many short-sighted North Dakota voters cast their ballots for precisely this.

Jennifer Puhl, who brought a powerful politician to justice, is The Forum's 2025 Area Person of the Year
Puhl said she pursued charges against Holmberg because he targeted the young, broken and weak for decades. He used his power and influence to leverage favors in exchange for sex, and people he targeted were beholden to him, she said.
“I believe he was able to do that for so long because of his position,” she said. “He held a position of a lot of authority. He controlled a lot of money, and I think because of that, people would do things for him.”

Port: Prominent kitty litter conspiracy theorist running for the North Dakota Legislature
Benson apparently believed, and expected the public to believe, that kids were pooing and peeing in litter boxes in the schools.
This was complete bunk. Outside of a lot of rumor mongering and heavy breathing on social media, there was as much evidence for schools in our region providing students with litter boxes as there was for the claim that the 2020 election was stolen. It simply wasn't happening, and it's hard to imagine that it could have happened without someone — a teacher, a parent, a student — snapping a picture of the litter boxes and sharing them.

Letter: Serve the people or the pocketbook
Their legislative action recently was to abandon the thousands of North Dakotans that are on the ACA subsidy health insurance program. First, they did such by voting through their BBB. This decimates a number of programs that actually work for the people and not the pocketbook. One of which is the health subsidies. Second was even more egregious. Their recent action to abandon thousands of North Dakotans, millions of Americans by refusing to extend these subsidies for at least one year (at the minimum) while they formulate and pass a health plan that will seamlessly provide health care access for Americans.

Fargo-Moorhead homeless advocates sound alarm amid federal housing grant uncertainty
Locally, YWCA Executive Director Erin Prochnow said the impacts of the proposed overhaul could be felt even earlier than that, with at least one of her organization’s housing programs slated to run out of federal funds at the end of 2025, after HUD announced in November that the grant that had been scheduled for two years of funding would only last one year, and that organizations would have to reapply under the new rules.
The HUD reforms took direct aim at low-barrier, permanent, supportive housing for the disabled and the chronically homeless, according to Chandler Esslinger, the director of the FM Coalition to End Homelessness. She said advocates are gravely concerned the HUD cuts could “destroy infrastructure that has been painstakingly built over the last several years by this community to help those most at risk.”

Peggy Flanagan is Minnesota's Lieutenant Governor, a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe, and is running for the U.S. Senate in Minnesota. She joins Joel to speak after the tragic shooting of a Minnesota resident by an ICE officer.

NEW: Donald Trump’s Job Market is Faltering — Layoffs Reach Highest Levels Since 2020
“Just eleven months of Donald Trump have thrown the job market into chaos. Jobs cuts are skyrocketing, hiring has slowed, and unemployment is still high — and working families are being squeezed as prices continue to soar. And what is Trump doing about it? He’s running a foreign country that taxpayers are forced to bankroll. The message is clear: Trump will always put Americans last.”

Breaking: Protesters clash with ICE outside federal building in St. Paul
We’ve pulled U.S. Border Patrol agents who are trained to interdict individuals in remote areas where the rules of engagement are the same but the threats they face are so radically different, and we put them up in urban areas like Minneapolis. And really these videos that we’re seeing now are very concerning to me because it’s ICE and Border Patrol agents who just have no training and experience in doing crowd control or public order policing.
Unfortunately, I think it seems like the administration wants to steer the other way. The secretary herself returned to Minneapolis, doubled down on the defense of both the operation itself but also — it’s not about the escalation, but rather the opposite. I’m worried about what’s going to happen in the coming days.

Trump’s Childcare Funding Freezes Are Going to Hit All Kids Hard
“If the children we serve lose their tuition assistance, it will destabilize our entire budget, like it will for 4,000 other programs. In many areas, there aren’t enough families that can afford childcare to take these spots, and programs will have to cut staff,” said Valdez. “Cutting staff means cutting spots for kids, whether they receive assistance or not. In many cases, it means closing childcare centers altogether. It means a collapse of the childcare system in Minnesota.”

Don also highlights the courage of reporter Sharyn Alfonsi, who spoke out forcefully against the move in a blistering internal critique, raising urgent questions about editorial independence, corporate pressure, and the future of one of the most trusted names in American journalism. What does this say about the direction CBS is taking? Who gets to decide what stories the public is allowed to see? Fragmenting the U.S. Department of Education Creates Chaos for Rural Students
These delays mean postponing reading interventions, suspending behavioral health services for vulnerable students or holding off on hiring staff. Since the creation of the Small Rural School Achievement program in 2001, which provides grants essential to bridging rural funding gaps, I hadn’t experienced a single delay in federal education funding — until this year. This is clear evidence that instability in Washington quickly reaches rural communities.

BREAKING: House Republicans Refuse to Lower Health Care Costs for Working Families (Again)
“House Republicans have once again chosen to abandon working families by voting against lower health care premiums. Millions of everyday Americans have already seen their health care premiums skyrocket, and what are Donald Trump and Republicans doing to help? Not a damn thing. They already gutted Medicaid while handing out massive tax cuts to billionaires — and now they see no problem with allowing costs to skyrocket even more. House Democrats fought tooth and nail to pass this bill, and now the Senate must come to the table and extend the tax credits — it’s time to stop screwing around with Americans’ health care.”

As Trump Meets With Oil Executives on Venezuela and Ignores Affordability, Americans Record Lowest Ever Confidence in Government Economic Policy
“Donald Trump continues to sell Americans out to put his interests first. The president who promised to be ‘America First’ would rather meet with his wealthy oil buddies to map out how they can turn a profit from Venezuelan oil while the U.S. manages the country indefinitely than help the working families who are struggling to make ends meet, afford health care, and scrape by in his economy. It’s no wonder most Americans blame Trump for the pitiful state of the economy. Trump’s corruption and self-interest are on full display.”

Plato Censored as Texas A&M Carries Out Course Review
“Your decision to bar a philosophy professor from teaching Plato is unprecedented … You are making Texas A&M famous—but not for the right reasons,” Peterson said in his response to Sweet, which he shared with Inside Higher Ed. The Plato texts include passages from his Socratic dialogue Symposium that discuss patriarchy, masculinity, gender identity and the human condition. In one excerpt, the “Myth of the Androgyne,” the Greek playwright Aristophanes says, “First, you should learn the nature of humanity … for in the first place there were three kinds of human being and not two as nowadays, male and female. No, there was also a third kind, a combination of both genders.”

I was gonna make my voice heard because that’s the only way to hold them accountable for what they did. Someone has to be held accountable. Treating people a certain way without dignity or respect or humanity is so fucking wrong. To not have any fucking rights, especially here in America, when that’s what we’re supposed to be all about—it’s wrong. It goes against everything we stand for. And so I hope that the justice system, even though I don’t believe it works all the time, I hope that in this case it works.

The CDC just sidelined these childhood vaccines. Here's what they prevent
Hepatitis B. The disease causes liver cancer, cirrhosis, and other serious illnesses and is particularly dangerous when contracted by babies and young children. The hepatitis B virus is transmitted through blood and other bodily fluids, even in microscopic amounts, and can survive on surfaces for a week. From 1990 to 2019, vaccination resulted in a 99% decline in reported cases of acute hepatitis B among children and teens. Liver cancer among American children has also plummeted as a result of universal childhood vaccination. But the hepatitis B virus is still around, with 2,000-3,000 acute cases reported annually among unvaccinated adults. More than 17,000 chronic hepatitis B diagnoses were reported in 2023. The CDC estimates about half of people infected don't know they have it.

Is Noem DOGE-ing the Federal Emergency Management Agency?
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has repeatedly expressed a desire to shrink or eliminate the agency. The Post reported that she previously made recommendations to cut staffing by about half.
Those terminations are likely to come in waves and began with cuts on New Year’s Eve with the elimination of positions that were part of FEMA’s largest workforce, known as the Cadre of On-Call Response and Recovery — staffers who are among the first on the ground after a disaster, helping survivors and managing the crucial aid and grants that fuel recovery and rebuilding. They often stick around for years to help communities recover. There are about 17,500 CORE employees spread across the country — the majority of FEMA’s workforce of 22,316, according to the article. Under the Stafford Act, FEMA hires these staffers for multiyear terms using the disaster relief fund.
