Fedorchak is lying to North Dakotans, Democrats are fighting to lower healthcare costs for American families

John Hoeven, Kevin Cramer, and Julie Fedorchak have had months to negotiate with Democrats, and they refused. Their only way to save face when North Dakotans see their 2026 premiums go through the roof is to lie to their constituents. Does Fedorchak think that when your grandma goes to the emergency room for a stroke, she should have to present her passport or be refused care? Medicaid funding doesn’t go to individuals; it keeps our hospitals from going broke.

Fedorchak thinks she can just say the words ‘illegal immigrants’ and you’ll forget that your costs have gone up exponentially since she took office, that she’s letting the president send $40 billion to Argentina, or that she’s blocking a vote on the Epstein files. Republicans must negotiate, or voters must cast their ballots for Democrats.

Saddened by demolition of White House’s East Wing

It surprises me greatly that our president, with no consultation from any other body — be it historic preservationist or political — has the right to so significantly and permanently alter a public space that belongs to all of us.

I know a significant majority of our readers voted for Donald Trump, but I wonder how many are OK with his ability to decree a major portion of the White House — our house — be demolished just because he wished to have a 1,000-seat ballroom take its place.

That this occurred during a congressional recess and a government shutdown is just as alarming. Clearly, there was no authority — or will — to stop him. But you could say the same of many of Trump’s decisions since taking office.

Letter: We need more kindness, compromise and maturity

People who are undocumented are not eligible for health care except for some rare instances and of that outlined in EMTALA. It is not routinely done as she is implying. I think she needs to retract this survey. It's whole purpose is to incite more division within this country. We don't need more division. We need more compromise, more human kindness, and more maturity, something that the GOP seems to lack these days.

Letter: North Dakota needs a state-owned beef plant

Today, we are in a similar position, with foreign markets closed for our agricultural products such as soybeans, and immense consolidation in the beef processing industry holding our ranchers hostage. As a state we once again need to invest public money in ourselves, creating markets for our producers to sell to. The State Mill is profitable every year, and their is no reason to suspect that further state owned and managed processing capacity will do otherwise.

Letter: Weak delegation must stand up to lunacy

This is one of the most symbolic and historic buildings in the country. What's next? Bulldoze the White House itself and replace it with a Trump Tower?

It is unbelievable our delegation is so weak that they will do nothing to stop this lunatic from the destruction he is causing.

Letter: ND constituents aren't being heard by our delegation

Repeatedly, I reach out to my North Dakota senators and representative to share my concerns. As I receive responses from North Dakota’s delegation in Washington that reiterate their positions rather than acknowledge or engage with my concerns, I find it increasingly difficult to feel heard as a constituent. I was particularly disappointed to learn that Sen. Cramer referred to those who disagree with the GOP as “left-wing nut jobs.” Such language is not only dismissive but also deeply disrespectful to many North Dakotans who have devoted their lives to serving our communities in medicine, education, agriculture, pastoral care and countless other professions. These citizens – your constituents – are the very people who strengthen and sustain our state every day.

North Dakota Farmers Union president calls on congressional delegation to act

Also hanging over farmers and ranchers right now, Watne said, is the expiration of Affordable Care Act premium tax credits.
“If those credits aren’t extended, roughly 70% of farm families in North Dakota will see their health insurance premiums double,” he said. “How much more can we take?”

In Two Days, Nutrition Assistance Funding Could Lapse for the First Time in History

“The federal government is taking away food and health care from the poor to fund tax breaks to billionaires. It is proper and charitable that the Governor directed this funding to support food assistance programs. But the partisan dig at the end of his announcement is misdirected.” Senator Tim Mathern, member of the Senate Appropriations Committee (D-11) said, “U.S. Senate Democrats are asking for Congressional Republicans to extend Affordable Care Act tax credits so North Dakotans’ health care premiums don’t skyrocket next year, and to cancel the Medicaid cuts that will kick at least 18,000 North Dakotans off their health care coverage. Our Republican Insurance Commissioner has also asked the delegation to extend the ACA tax credits. Forcing Americans to choose between prioritizing hunger or health care is cruel, and it’s a false dilemma. Our members of Congress need to get back to work and negotiate with the Democrats.”

Letter: We urge North Dakota's delegation to protect SNAP benefits

We are tired of the blame game. We call on Sens. Cramer and Hoeven and Rep. Fedorchak, to lead—not as Republicans, but as representatives of the people of North Dakota. North Dakotans need a bipartisan solution that protects SNAP, extends health care subsidies, and ends the government shutdown.

Port: Where is North Dakota's crime report?

I'd hate to believe the problem is that the data doesn't uphold certain political narratives. If statewide crime is trending down, it may take some of the wind out of the sails of Wrigley's argument for tougher sentencing, particularly when putting more people in jail for longer has a dramatic cost for taxpayers.

Tribune editorial: Farmer criticism of fed ag policy is well-placed

Trump’s actions on soybeans and cattle are seen as efforts to support Argentine President Javier Milei, who won his election this week. Milei has been a strong supporter of Trump.
Farmers and ranchers should be insulted by efforts to bring down beef prices — and by Trump’s assertion that they should be grateful for his policies. Yes, the higher prices are reflected in grocery stores. But cattle herds were reduced because it was difficult at the time to make a profit. If cattle are profitable the herds will increase and prices will eventually drop. It’s a well-known cycle.

Port: Good job, Gov. Armstrong, but it's not enough

America is the birthplace of modern democracy and one of the wealthiest civilizations in the history of humanity. For want of a little cooperation and competence from our elected leaders, we are on the cusp of letting millions and millions of our citizens — children, the elderly, the working poor — go hungry.
And freeze, too.

It's not getting nearly as much attention as the SNAP shortfall, but with winter weather on our doorsteps, funding for heating assistance is held up, too. Something that's a particularly acute problem for our friends and neighbors in the tribal communities.

So, again, good job Gov. Armstrong, but it's not enough.

“It could signal a sweeping reconfiguration of global agricultural trade stretching from Latin America to Europe and Australia.”

“It’s Bullsh*t”: Democrats slam Trump admin, accuse USDA of withholding SNAP benefits

Funding for several federal programs is expected to end on Saturday, Nov. 1, with Congress not getting any closer to reopening the government.
One Democratic leader called it "bullsh*t" during a press conference on Wednesday while holding up a USDA document that outlines the funding contingency plans.
"This funding for SNAP has never lapsed in the history of the United States. Last shutdown, under President Trump, they found a way to use this money."
The shutdown is now the second-longest in U.S. history, just days away from becoming the longest in U.S. history. The longest shutdown was 35 days during President Donald Trump’s first term.
On Nov. 1, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which provides food assistance to approximately 42 million people, will run out of funding, resulting in the federal food aid program ending until further notice.
SNAP is the largest food aid program in the United States. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) will also not go out on Saturday.
“Bottom line, the well has run dry,” USDA’s notice said.
On Tuesday, governors and attorney generals from 25 states sued the Trump administration to stop the Nov. 1 benefits cutoff.

Corn, debt and doubt: A record harvest rattles Trump’s farm economy

Farm debt is set to hit a record high this year as global grain flows shift, deepening the downturn in an industry battered by trade policies set in motion under Trump, largely maintained under Democratic president Joe Biden, and broadened in Trump’s second term.
China, usually the top buyer of U.S. soybeans, hasn’t purchased a bushel from this year’s crop. Last year, it bought 45% of U.S. soybean exports.
Anticipating trouble, many farmers planted more corn. They bet exports to Mexico and Canada, ethanol production and livestock feed would keep prices afloat.

Trump’s Failed Economy: Layoffs Are Surging and Jobs Are Disappearing

To make matters worse, Trump and Republicans’ refusal to extend the enhanced ACA tax credits or pay for SNAP funding is putting health care and food assistance on the chopping block for millions of Americans.
