What happened today?
Sen. Keith Boehm’s (R-33) book-banning bill (SB 2307) passed the House by 2 votes. Call Kelly Armstrong and tell him to veto this bill: (701) 328-2200.
|
The House also voted to cap Ethics Commission investigations to 180 days and removed a proposed new staff position from the Ethics Commission budget that would have educated our lawmakers on how to follow our ethics laws.
|
|
What's coming up?
The 69th Legislative Session is coming to a close soon, but there are still some big votes coming up, including the school voucher bills SB 2400 and HB 1540. These bills use public funds to subsidize private schools. |

How cutting Medicaid would affect long-term care and family caregivers
Trump ordered the DOJ to investigate two former officials he regards as enemies—this comes on the heels of his efforts to intimidate law firms from taking on clients who oppose him. Andrew Weissmann joins Tim Mill
|
About half of Medicaid spending on elders is for "home and community based" services, which help about 4.5 million chronically ill or elderly people in the United States get care at home.
|
Medicaid pays wages to caregivers — friends, family members, or professional caregivers — who help with essential needs.

Reducing Medicaid services "would have profound effects on their health," says David Grabowski, health economist at Harvard Medical School. "These are services they need every day to bathe themselves, dress themselves, get themselves to the kitchen." Cuts could lead to hospitalizations, emergency room visits, and in some cases early death, he adds.

We’re Staring Down A CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS! (w/ Bill Kristol)
We are here: Trump is openly defying the Supreme Court while sitting side-by-side with a Latin American strongman who openly mocked our judicial system from inside the Oval Office. Trump so badly wants his one-man rule and Republicans keep helping him, while corporate America keeps trying to get on his good side. Meanwhile, the intimidation is chilling free speech on college campuses and within immigrant communities.

Trump’s Wildly Unconstitutional Plot to Banish U.S. Citizens to Gulags
Among the most disturbing ideas floated by the Trump administration in recent weeks is the possibility that it will send U.S. citizens to be imprisoned by the Salvadoran government. Nayib Bukele, El Salvador’s Trump-friendly president, reportedly made the offer in recent weeks. Trump raised the possibility with reporters in the Oval Office last week, though he conceded that he “[doesn’t] know what the law says on that.”

The Republican attempt to steal a state supreme court election, explained
Griffin primarily involves military and overseas voters who cast their ballot using either an online or paper form permitting them to vote absentee. Though North Carolina state law generally requires voters to show a photo ID before they can vote, the state’s administrative code provides that military and overseas voters are “not required to submit a photocopy of acceptable photo identification” when they cast their ballot.
