Committee recommends ‘do not pass’ on controversial North Dakota library content bill

The North Dakota House Appropriations Committee voted 22-1 Friday to issue a do-not-pass recommendation on a bill that would require school and public libraries to relocate books deemed “sexually explicit” to areas not easily accessible by minors.

North Dakota Senate votes down bill on parents' access to minor's medical exam rooms

The measure garnered extensive opposition testimony in the Senate Human Services Committee from medical professionals, including representatives from Central Dakota Forensic Nurse Examiners, Rolette County Public Health, the North Dakota Hospital Association and the North Dakota Medical Association.

They said they were concerned the bill would “reinforce the power dynamics that perpetuate abuses,” and potentially conflict with North Dakota laws that allow minors to consent to their own health care in limited circumstances, such as instances of sexual assault, or when consent is implied due to a life-threatening situation that requires emergency examination and treatment.

Homeland Security terminates NDSU student’s immigration status

"In light of recent national developments, we anticipate that similar situations may arise again," the email said. "Please know that ISSAS remains deeply committed to supporting, guiding, and advocating for our students — especially in moments of uncertainty."

ISSAS hosted virtual and in-person town hall events this week for international students and faculty to offer support and "remind everyone that they are not alone," the message said.

Port: The best thing we can say about this book-banning lawmaker is that he's lazy

Hilariously, Boehm proposed removing his bill's restrictions on digital content. He asked that a requirement for age verification on the online library system be cut, something the state library estimated would cost $2 million to implement.

This was desperation, and state Rep. Karla Rose Hanson, a Fargo Democrat who serves on the committee, called it out. "It seems like it would be an inconsistent application of your policy, just to eliminate a fiscal note in order to get it passed," she said, and, well, yeah. Precisely.

Port: This is terrifying

Maybe there is a sound justification for the Trump administration's actions against this NDSU student, but can we be sure of that? The Trump administration wrongly deported Kilmar Abrego Garcia to a "terrorism confinement center" in El Salvador despite a judge's order granting him legal status. The U.S. Supreme Court has now ordered Garcia to be returned to the United States, and so far, the Trump administration is defying court orders.

How confident can we be that the processes around these deportations are fair and just? Not very.

Friday Federal News Round-Up

Tariffs Wreak Havoc on Global Economy

Talk of tariffs dominated the news this week. First, nearly every country got stuck with tariffs—not even the penguins were spared! After people realized the math was 'economically indefensible,' the Trump Administration caved under pressure and capped the rate of tariffs at 10% for most countries during a "90-day pause". China's tariff rate was hiked to 145% and the tariff rate on Canada and Mexico will stay at 25%

Nearly three-quarters of Americans are bracing for higher prices on items that they buy every day. Across-the-board tariffs are effectively just a sales tax on Americans, and it will spike grocery costs, gas prices, and so much more.

    Federal Cuts Hurt North Dakotans

DOGE Cuts are starting to hit home. The Center for American Progress has launched a tracker where you can see how states and congressional districts have been affected.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ruled that Trump’s firing of 16,000 probationary federal employees can move forward. The Court did not rule whether or not these firings were legal, but it would be a more arduous and lengthy process for these workers to keep fighting for their jobs.

Immigration News Portends Dark Chapter for all Americans

A 60 Minutes report from Sunday showed that many of the people who the Trump Administration has sent to a horrific mega-prison in El Salvador do not have criminal records. One is Andry Jose Hernández Romero who came to the United States because, as a gay man, he feared for his life in Venezuela.

The Supreme Court unanimously ruled that Trump officials must “facilitate” the release of a Maryland man who they MISTAKENLY deported there. The administration is currently refusing to say where this man is, though.

A judge has ruled that Columbia student Mahmoud Khalil—who is a legal permanent resident—can be deported. All it takes is Marco Rubio writing a two-page memo saying he thinks a green card holder poses "potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences" to remove someone from the United States.

The Trump Administration also appears to be revoking student visas en masse—including terminating a recent NDSU grad’s Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) status.

A federal judge ruled that immigration agents can conduct enforcement operations at houses of worship.

The Trump administration is doing everything they can to erode the First Amendment. They’ve started with immigrants, but they won’t stop there. A U.S. Citizen and Attorney was also detained when he returned from a vacation with his wife and children. His only issue was that he is representing someone who had participated in Gaza protests last year.

'No way' GOP budget plan can be done without 'deep deep cuts' to Medicaid: Rep. Clark

The GOP budget resolution calls for finding $880 billion in spending cuts, which democrats warn would require deep slashes to Medicaid. Rep. Katherine Clark (D-MA) joins Chris Jansing to discuss the impact on American families.

The DNC’s ‘People’s Cabinet’ is an idea with real potential

For example, in the face of the latest jobs report and Trump’s disastrous tariffs, former Labor Secretary Robert Reich and former acting Labor Secretary Julie Su joined a media call Friday to hammer out Trump’s economic agenda. But there’s no telling who might be speaking on that front next month. The question of who is setting the Democratic Party’s economic policy moving forward is still left unanswered. Likewise, the only unifying vision that the party has collectively agreed to remains the platform Harris and President Joe Biden helped craft ahead of last year’s loss to Trump.

Under Trump, freedom of speech in universities takes on a new meaning

"If anything, this administration is trying to eliminate academic freedom. And frankly, the first order of business is convincing and threatening professors and administrators and students to essentially shackle themselves. To not speak out. To not research particular issues. To not use even words that they think this administration will have issue with. And I think that's what makes it incredibly chilling in this moment."

Democrats call for insider trading investigation over Trump’s tariff pause

“We urge the SEC to investigate whether the tariff announcements, which caused the market crash and subsequent partial recovery, enriched administration insiders and friends at the expense of the American public and whether any insiders, including the president’s family, had prior knowledge of the tariff pause that they abused to make stock trades ahead of the president’s announcement,” said the letter, led by the Massachusetts senator and former presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren.
