What happened today?
|
Rep. Collette Brown's (D-9) bill (HB 1603) which will provide funding to the state historical society for Native American grave protection and repatriation compliance efforts and Rep. Mary Schneider’s (D-21) bill (HB 1410) to review state laws relating to criminal conduct against children both passed the Senate unanimously!
|
|
What's coming up?
| Sen. Keith Boehm’s (R-33) book-banning bill (SB 2307) has not left the House Appropriations Committee yet, but it will hit the House Floor for a vote soon! Our librarians shouldn't have to worry about facing CRIMINAL CHARGES because one patron doesn't like a book. North Dakotans could also lose access to e-book/audiobook apps like Hoopla and Libby and our students could lose access to academic journals. Tell your Representatives to VOTE NO on SB 2307! |

House committee recommends removing new Ethics Commission position, adding deadline
|
Rep. Karla Rose Hanson, D-Fargo, was the only member of the committee opposed to removing the education staffer.
|
Hanson said dedicating an additional employee to education would give the commission’s other staff more time to focus on complaints. She also reasoned that more education would reduce the number of ethics violations the commission must investigate.

Legislature votes to ban approval and ranked-choice voting in North Dakota
“The advantage of approval voting is it encourages individuals to run for office. And we’ve had really good engagement in civic activity because of approval voting,” said Sen. Kathy Hogan (D-Fargo). “This has demonstrated that we want people to be involved in political life and this methodology has worked very effectively for our community.”

Tribune editorial: Ukrainians should remain until war ends
Our country and state have supported Ukraine since the beginning of the war, and this isn’t the time to stop doing so. The Trump administration shouldn’t deport the Ukrainians. If it tries, Congress should stop it.

Letter: The civic engagement this year is truly inspiring
What I have loved seeing this legislative session is that it feels so much more active, with some bills getting hundreds of pieces of testimony and recently a statewide protest attracting almost 4,000 people. I love any civic engagement we have, because the more people contributing their voice and genuinely held beliefs, the better we do as a society. I wrote last month about the courage of this session , and that’s true of anyone with the courage to speak about their values, even if I don’t agree with them.

|
Howard Lutnick is reviewing all NOAA contracts above $100,000, according to three agency employees who spoke anonymously out of fear of retribution at work.

There are hundreds of such contracts across the agency that need to be reviewed each year and several that have been paused or otherwise impacted by the secretary's review, according to an agency employee familiar with the contracting process.

Sotomayor’s Harsh Dissent on Trump Arrests Offers a Terrifying Warning
The fate of dozens of Venezuelans deported by the Trump administration to a maximum security prison in El Salvador remains in doubt. So does the fate of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who administration officials admit was removed in error even as they refuse to return him to the United States. The Supreme Court just issued rulings on these cases, putting a hold on a lower court’s order to reverse Abrego Garcia’s removal, and allowing the deportations of Venezuelans to resume for now. In that second one, Sonia Sotomayor issued a powerful dissent, and buried in it is an alarming warning. We talked to American Immigration Council senior fellow Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, who expertly demystifies these rulings for us and explains how Sotomayor laid bare the alarming stakes we face at this fraught moment.
