|
Communities and businesses near sites administered by the National Park Service and those reliant on Canadian tourists are facing uncertainty after recent policy decisions by the Trump administration.

After the firing of 1,000 National Park Service workers on Feb. 14 along with threats of tariffs against Canada and barbs issued by President Trump and others in his administration referring to our neighbor to the north as the “51st state,” informal boycotts ensued and the economic impact is already being reported.

After acknowledging that DOGE is not a government agency, he continued by praising Elon Musk, saying, “...by consolidating and streamlining federal operations under visionary leaders like Elon Musk.” When I see Musk on stage with a chainsaw in hand, it strikes me that he’s enjoying the chaos he’s creating, with little concern for the human cost. It’s clear his goal goes far beyond “reducing bureaucracy.” It’s difficult to see him as a visionary.

“I really don’t feel sorry for them,” Habba said. “They should get back to work for the American people, like President Trump and this administration.”
Habba was asked about fired workers whom Democrats invited to President Trump's joint address to Congress Tuesday. A reporter noted that some military veterans have been part of that group.
"That’s something the president has always cared about — anybody in blue, anybody that serves this country. But at the same time, … we have a fiscal responsibility to use taxpayer dollars to pay people that actually work," she said.

Social Security has never missed a payment. DOGE actions threaten ‘interruption of benefits,’ ex-agency head says

Social Security has never missed a benefit payment since the program first began sending individuals monthly benefits more than eight decades ago.
|

But the recent actions at the U.S. Social Security Administration by Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency are putting monthly benefit checks for more than 72.5 million Americans at risk, former commissioner and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley told CNBC.com.

“Ultimately, you’re going to see the system collapse and an interruption of benefits,” O’Malley said. “I believe you will see that within the next 30 to 90 days.”
