Legislators overstep bounds, waste time

It has often been our own Minot representatives putting forth the bills and resolutions forcing their personal beliefs on the rest of us, instead of working toward the common good.

I am hoping to get the chance to support other candidates in the next election. I belong to neither political party, and would be glad to support any candidate who possesses common sense and decency.

I think the majority of North Dakotans are not interested in having their government legislate their personal beliefs onto the rest of us. We need to work harder to make sure our current representatives know this isn’t acceptable — and if they don’t listen, vote them out as soon as possible.

Friday Federal News Round Up - 28 February 2025

The pace of chaos from POTUS and his destruction crew has not let up. There are a couple things we can know at this point: 1) in many, but not all, cases the courts are proving to be a check on the actions taken by Musk and POTUS, 2) many of the actions are not final - they get announced, seemingly as a test for how far POTUS can go or clawed back when it is realized that it is actually dangerous or wildly unpopular. We need to keep the pressure on, keep pressing for the law and our constitution to be upheld.

From Working Families to Economic Forecasters, No One Trusts Donald Trump on the Economy
  • Trump’s MAGA agenda is causing economic forecasters to sound the alarm on threats to the economy as warning signs start to signal its decline.
    • Now, a report shows electricity prices are on track to rise — adding yet another cost to hardworking families.
  • Thanks to Trump’s reckless agenda, economic policy uncertainty is higher today than at any time during the Great Recession.
  • Instead of lowering costs as he promised on the campaign trail, Trump is causing panic as working families worry about long-term inflation and the cost of Trump’s reckless economic agenda.
Trump’s Mass Firings and Funding Cuts Are Affecting Americans Across the Country
  • Donald Trump’s mass firings and funding cuts continue to wreak havoc on critical programs across the country and jeopardize Americans’ hard-earned benefits in an effort to give tax handouts to the ultra-wealthy.
  • In a blow to America’s seniors, Trump ordered the Social Security Administration to cut its staff by half, depleting an already overwhelmed workforce, and fired the lawyers defending Medicare’s ability to negotiate lower drug prices against Big Pharma.
  • On top of that, as egg prices skyrocket, the Trump administration is struggling to rehire critical USDA staff who were working on keeping Americans safe from a bird flu epidemic.
  • Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth also signaled plans for mass firings in the military. Just last week, Trump fired multiple military leaders, including the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, putting the safety and security of every American at risk.
  • Three in five Americans are concerned about Trump’s reckless agenda of firings and funding cuts — and they’re most concerned that Elon Musk and DOGE have been given free reign to wreak havoc.
House GOP Passes Trump’s Billionaire Budget to Give Handouts to the Rich While Likely Gutting Health Care
  • Donald Trump and Republicans promised voters that they would lower costs, and instead, they are poised to implement a budget scheme that could gut health care and make it harder for people to put food on the table, all to fund Trump’s tax handout to the ultra-wealthy.
  • This week, House Republicans pushed through their disastrous funding agenda that includes $880 billion in cuts. How will they pay for it? By threatening Medicaid coverage for 22 million Americans and making massive SNAP cuts.
  • Time and time again, Trump and the GOP have made their priorities clear: Make the rich richer while scamming Americans out of their health care coverage and food assistance.

Sen. Ben Ray Luján on X: House Republicans just set the stage to slash Medicaid for millions of Americans to pay for the Trump Tax Scam.

They promised they wouldn’t touch it and now they’re backtracking to take away health care from moms, babies, and seniors. Don’t be silent on this — make yourself heard.

Senate Budget Committee on X: WOW: Republicans’ first order of business this Congress was to ram through a $7.5 BILLION tax cut for billionaire fossil fuel companies—leaving working families to foot the bill.

This is the Republican plan at work: Families lose, billionaires win.

Robert Reich on X: Trump's Social Security Administration commissioner just called for a 50% staff reduction.

This would gut SSA field offices and make it harder for millions of seniors to access benefits.

Make no mistake: this is an attack on Social Security itself.

Democratic Governors on X: When the Trump administration froze millions of dollars in critical funding, Gov. @JoshShapiroPA took them to court.

And he won.

FactPost on Bluesky: The Trump administration is reportedly planning to cut the Social Security Administration in half, threatening the handling of millions of Americans’ earned benefits.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren on Bluesky: You've heard of girl math, but have you heard of billionaire math?

Trump's temporary tax handouts for the rich are expiring this year, and Republicans want working Americans to foot the bill.

They're claiming it'll cost you nothing, but in reality, these tax handouts cost trillions.

U.S. Cancels Ebola Aid in Uganda Despite Elon Musk’s Claims

Hours after billionaire Elon Musk told the president's Cabinet that the U.S. had quickly restored previously canceled aid to fight Ebola in Uganda, the Trump administration officially ended at least four of five U.S.-funded Ebola contracts in the country.

The contracts were just a handful of the 10,000 grants and contracts canceled by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.S. State Department amid cuts by Musk's so-called Department of Governmental Efficiency, or DOGE.

200-plus Democratic lawmakers backing lawsuit seeking to block CFPB dismantling

Democrats contend in the brief, which was filed in the U.S. District Court of Washington, that President Trump’s efforts to weaken the CFPB are inflicting “substantial and irreversible” damage on consumers. Democrats Sue Trump Over Attempt to Control Independent Election Agency

The Democratic Party is suing President Donald Trump over an executive order that could make it easier for him to tilt elections in the GOP’s favor.
The lawsuit, filed Friday by Elias Law Group on behalf of the three national Democratic committees, challenges an expansive executive order Trump issued earlier this month that would give him unprecedented power over key regulatory agencies that were designed to operate without direct White House control.
