NDFU President Mark Watne speaks to Trump's soybean actions with Argentina

Joel Heitkamp is joined on "News and Views" by Mark Watne, the President of North Dakota Farmers Union, to have a conversation about soybeans and tariffs.

This week, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the U.S. government was in negotiations to extend a $20 billion swap line to the Argentine government and potentially purchase the country’s foreign bonds. Almost immediately after, a reported 20 shiploads of Argentine soybeans were purchased by China after the Argentine government announced it would waive taxes on its soybean exports.

Dr. Doug Griffin is Sanford Health’s Chief Physician and is Board Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. He joins Joel on "News and Views" for a conversation on Tylenol and vaccines.

North Dakota faces short deadline to apply for $50B rural health program; special session possible

Sen. Josh Boschee, D-Fargo, said the quick turnaround is reminiscent of when the state was granted emergency COVID-19 relief funding.

“My concern is this amount of money coming into our state and us being able to deploy it, instead of having to send it back and lose the opportunity,” he said.

ND Lawmakers seeking balance between public access and personal security amid heightened political violence

“I think we have to balance. There probably doesn’t need to be an expectation that constituents can just knock on your front door and have a meeting at any time. We can have meetings in public spaces and in the Capitol we all have phone numbers and email addresses to contact us,” said Ista.

Letter: The president should lead the efforts to tone down rhetoric

He wants to “unify the country,” but finishes with, “the radial left is vicious and horrible” and “should be investigated for Kirk’s death.” The “left is trying to destroy the country,” while those who disagree with him are “vermin,” “scum,” and “guilty of treason.” He is unconcerned about violence on the right as “they are defending the country from crime.” Both Don Jr. and Eric Trump were on FOX to state there is no political violence on the right, it's all on the left.

Trump’s economy is TANKING

And Trump's trade war is hurting everyone from customers at the grocery store to soybean farmers who are left without trading partners. This tariff is just another thing that we have to worry about. Todd Western III is a soybean farmer in Waterloo, Iowa. He says trade tensions between the US and China are fueling uncertainty for his business. China, the world's largest buyer of soybeans, hasn't pre-purchased any soybeans for the upcoming US harvest. The revenue on our farm is just like any other farm. It's volatile. Western and other farmers like him are also concerned tariffs will drive up cost. Current rates will mean higher prices for items ranging from fertilizers to farm equipment to tractors. Again, none of this needed to happen.

Grocery prices have jumped up, and there's no relief in sight

Despite Trump's promise to lower prices, the overall cost of groceries is higher now than when he was sworn in. The president's crackdown on illegal immigration — including targeting people who pick and process our food — could add to upward pressure on prices. Trump's tariffs are also contributing to higher prices for imported staples like bananas and coffee.

Jimmy Kimmel and the MAGA strong-arming of American media

As with so many of the Trump administration’s excesses, a simple recitation of the events leading to Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension sounds like something out of dystopian fiction. ABC’s Wednesday night announcement that it was putting Jimmy Kimmel Live! on indefinite hiatus in the face of White House threats is the latest sign that U.S. media are increasingly coming under the control of President Donald Trump and his MAGA movement.
Trump had been targeting Kimmel and ABC for months. In the wake of frequent administration critic Stephen Colbert’s July announcement that his late-night show was ending, the president gloated that Kimmel would be “NEXT to go.” Last month, Trump argued that the Federal Communications Commission should revoke the licenses of ABC stations because it broadcasts too many “BAD STORIES” about him and provides “unfair coverage of Republicans.” And on Monday morning, he threatened ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl, saying that Attorney General Pam Bondi might target him and his network for purportedly airing anti-Trump “hate speech.”

Trump’s Terrifying, Self-Serving Rebrand of Political Violence

It’s easy to paint the current administration’s attempts to suppress research meant to help us better understand and respond to political violence from the right, while also vastly overstating the threat of political violence from the left and threatening unlawful crackdowns, as projection or hypocrisy. But something else—something more dangerous—is driving the Trump’s administration’s moves to blame the left for all political violence.

Under Trump, we are watching an effort by those in power to redefine political violence in such a way that the right can never be culpable, in which the right is always the victim and the hero. When Trump erased the criminal convictions of around 1,500 people engaged in the attack on the Capitol on January 6, it was as if to say, any act committed by these “hostages” and “patriots” cannot be a crime because it was in support of him. Likewise, to dare punish such a patriot is itself “violence.” What we are at risk of right now is an administration that succeeds in persuading even more of these supporters that anything their political enemies do is violence—and that anything they do is just politics.

David Letterman’s Jimmy Kimmel Reaction: ‘We All See Where This Is Going, Correct?’

In the years before Trump ran for political office, he was a frequent guest on Letterman’s Late Night, but the host retired from the gig in 2015. (“Ten years ago, I was smart enough to cancel myself,” he cracked at the festival.) Now Letterman is as loud a critic as any of the Trump administration. “This is misery,” he said onstage. In a “dictatorship,” he said, “sooner or later, everyone is going to be touched.”

Senate rejects both parties' bills to avoid a shutdown, leaving next steps uncertain

The measure backed by Democrats in both chambers would have funded the government through Oct. 31 with a series of policy add-ons. It would permanently extend Obamacare subsidies set to expire at the end of the year, as well as reverse Medicaid cuts enacted in President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill.”
It also aimed to address Trump funding cuts that have infuriated Democrats in recent months: It would lift the freeze on foreign aid funding that the White House is withholding through “pocket rescissions” and restore funding for public broadcasting.

Trump’s response to a court’s decision on tariffs is bonkers – even for him

The truth is that if the courts block Trump’s across-the-board tariffs, that would be good news for the US economy. It would prevent Trump’s tariffs from further pushing up inflation and slowing economic growth. By giving a thumbs down to Trump’s tariffs, the courts might be doing him a huge economic and political favor because his tariffs, and the inflation they are fueling, have been dragging his dismal approval ratings even lower.
