Response to federal disaster aid request for June storms delayed more than usual, ND official says
The delay in federal approval comes as other states have seen disaster requests denied by FEMA during President Donald Trump’s second term. In May, Stateline reported that denials included relief requests for tornadoes in Arkansas, flooding in West Virginia and a windstorm in Washington. FEMA also denied a request that would have extended relief for victims of Hurricane Helene in North Carolina.

Guest column: Chaos at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Thousands of CDC staff have been fired, including physicians and other public health experts with deep expertise. These individuals were prohibited from doing their jobs for months while receiving salaries paid for by taxpayer dollars. Just as U.S. military personnel defend the country against threats, so too CDC personnel protect the nation’s health. Both defense and disease surveillance and intervention sharing a common goal—to keep the American public safe. In fact, hundreds of CDC staff took their jobs knowing they can be called away at a moment’s notice. For example, in the past, when Grand Forks experienced a tuberculosis outbreak, CDC personnel traveled to the city at least five times. Some stayed for extended periods to help prevent further spread of this dangerous disease. Like the U.S. military, CDC personnel have always gone where the country needs them.

Homelessness increases in North Dakota as population, housing costs also rise
Jena Gullo, executive director for the Missouri Slope Areawide United Way in Bismarck, which operates an overnight shelter, said the organization served 531 homeless people last year, a 78% increase compared to data collected in 2020. She added the facility has 42 beds, but typically shelters about 100 people each night with a majority coming from outside of Bismarck-Mandan because of a lack of homeless shelters in the region.
|
“With the population increasing and the needs increasing, we’re seeing a dramatic increase,” Gullo said. About 32% of those seeking shelter are Native American, she said, an overrepresentation of that demographic group which makes up about 5% of the population in North Dakota.

North Dakota university research could see ‘devastating’ cuts, officials warn
|
Representatives of North Dakota’s two largest universities say Trump administration efforts to curb federal spending have already cost the state millions in research funding — and their institutions expect to lose millions more in the coming years.
|
The executive branch is attempting to slash research spending by terminating existing grants and appropriating less money for research in the upcoming budget.

Port: District 25 Republicans applied a religious litmus test to legislative appointment
|
The inquiry came as part of an 18-question survey the district gave to the candidates, which was provided to me by a source in the district and confirmed by one of the candidates. Question 3 on the survey asked this: “What church do you attend, and how do you serve your church family?”
|
Making it clear that when the district refers to a “church,” they mean only the Christian religion, and that the district’s leaders understood that this sort of question might be problematic, the document also admonished those who received it to refer to Christian Scripture.

Port: It's been 51 days with no answer from Trump on deadly North Dakota storms
I should point out that Trump already has a reputation for slow-walking these requests for disaster aid and using them as political cudgels, even though past presidents of both parties responded to them as a matter of routine.

With SNAP cuts looming, a growing Albuquerque food line may foreshadow future need
“We are just seeing more of our neighbors who are housed coming, too, because it’s just hard for everyone,” Brown told Source New Mexico as people worked their way through the line Friday morning. “We’re really pleased that we can just expand that reach to anyone who might need it, but it certainly has expanded.”
|
Even before cuts to the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program contained in the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” take effect, President Donald Trump’s second term has already hurt the food bank’s ability to feed hungry people in a state where more than one in five residents has food stamps, food bank officials told Source New Mexico on Friday.

Yes, Your Morning Coffee Has Gotten More Expensive
|
But with the sky-high tariffs on some coffee-producing countries now in effect, roasteries and coffee shops across the country appear to have run out of room to keep prices low for customers. Trump, for instance, has imposed tariffs of 50% on imports from Brazil, 20% on Vietnam and 19% on Indonesia.
|
|
One coffee shop that has raised prices recently is Corvo Coffee in New York City. In a note to customers explaining its decision, it cited “the rising cost and tariffs.”
|
“We have held off on making this change for as long as possible,” the company wrote, “but in order to continue providing you with the same level of quality and reliability, this adjustment is necessary.”

U.S. diplomats say they are reluctant to share inconvenient truths with the Trump administration

|
"Even if offered discreetly, any statement, verbal or written, can be politicized and used against you," read the message from the American Foreign Service Association. "That is the reality we face."

After near-deportation, attorneys seek protections for immigrant children in HHS care
“I suffered so much that I will never forget the bad time I had that weekend,” H.D.C.R. said, adding that they wish to remain in the U.S. to fight their immigration case.
|
Many of the children also expressed their fear of returning. A 16-year-old girl, A.J.D.E., said her sister was murdered in Guatemala and she feared the same would happen to her. She said she felt relieved when she learned she was not going to be deported to Guatemala because of Sooknanan’s order.

‘We are far down this road of losing our democracy:’ Harris on potential of troops to Memphis
Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris described his concerns about these deployments in a statement on Facebook Thursday, saying, “I’ve been to countries where there isn’t freedom but there is military presence, where you can’t protest, and officials stay in power for as long as they want. That’s not America. Sadly, with the occupation of US cities, we are far down this road of losing our democracy.”

Charlie Kirk and the Empathy Trap
In the aftermath of Melissa Hortman’s murder last June, Mike Lee, an actual, real-life sitting U.S. senator, posted an image on X of the alleged shooter with the tagline “Nightmare on Walz Street”—a grotesque joke referencing an imagined connection to Governor Tim Walz. Lee also posted a second picture of the alleged assassin with the caption, “This is what happens when Marxists don’t get their way.” A less obviously gleeful remark but still a flippant one, tickled by the as-yet-unproven and quite unlikely possibility that Hortman’s killer targeted her because she was too far to the right.
