Everywhere in this state, there are like-minded people

I was at the No Kings Protest in Fargo on Saturday, and I know a lot of you were there too and at other No Kings rallies around the state. And I saw pictures from all around the country too, and it reminds me of something I think is so important, especially for us in North Dakota. Dem-NPL statewide candidates got almost 125,000 votes, almost a third of the voters of the state; that means that in every small town, every farm, everywhere in this state, there are like-minded people we can organize with to help push forward our values in our communities.

And we are not alone in this state either; No Kings Day reminded us that we are part of a nationwide movement. And it is important that we show up, because one thing we have learned is that a single protest in one place can be dismissed or suppressed. But peaceful protest all across the country is impossible to hide, and it is impossible to defeat. No Kings Day was the largest day of protest in American history; that doesn’t happen without us; newspapers all over the country and the world reported that. No Kings Day protests happened in all fifty states. That doesn’t happen without us.

No Kings Day also showed us a path forward for our party. People want to see us fight, they want a Democratic Party that fights. We can’t just tell people to hang out for two years and then go pull the lever for us in November 2026. That’s not how it works. We have to get people into the streets, we have to help people learn how to push our values forward now, little acts of resistance every day, and they have to see us doing it too, being visible, standing up tp the chaos, cruelty, and corruption of the Trump regime nationally and the Republican supermajority here. We must remind voters that at this moment, they live under exclusively Republican regimes. There is no Democrat for them to blame. All of their problems are problems Republicans caused or Republicans have failed to fix; as importantly, we have to show them that Democrats offer a better alternative, a better life. Donald Trump has been in the national news for ten years almost to the day. What has he actually done to make their lives better? The answer is nothing. Like a salesman, he sold them a story, but he has not provided any results. We must remind them that Democrats deliver. We ended the pandemic, ended the forever war in Afghanistan, invested in America through the Chips Act and the Build Back Better Act. Our Republican federal legislators won't even come back to North Dakota to face their own voters; they know they've helped Donald Trump get rich, and they know that means they've done nothing for North Dakotans.

I also want to address the deaths of Representative Hortman and her husband and the shootings of Senator Hoffman and his wife; we have also learned that the killer stopped at the houses of two other lawmakers. The day of the No Kings protest showed us in the most personal way that to those who oppose our struggle to preserve our democracy, it is worth killing for. For Rep. Hortman and her husband, as to so many others from around the country who have died in Trump-fueled violence and in generations before, it is a cause worth dying for. We can never forget that and we continue the struggle in their honor.

Help us elect great Democrats up and down the ballot!
The North Dakota Democratic-NPL is launching a new grassroots program called “Neighbor to Neighbor” where volunteers will connect with voters in your community to elect Democrats up and down the ballot. As a volunteer, you will be responsible for connecting with voters in 25 homes in your neighborhood or friends and family to help elect Democrats up and down the ballot about 3-4 times this year.
