NO KINGS PROTESTS
In America, we don’t put up with would-be kings. KICK OUT THE CLOWNS. KICK OUT THE CLOWNS (Women's March) and NO KINGS is a national day of action and mass mobilization in response to increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption from Trump and his allies. We’ve watched as they’ve cracked down on free speech, detained people for their political views, threatened to deport American citizens, and defied the courts. They’ve done this all while continuing to serve and enrich their billionaire allies.
|
π¨On Saturday, June 14, we’re taking to the streets nationwide. We’re not gathering to feed his ego. We’re building a movement that leaves him behind.π¨
|
The flag doesn’t belong to Donald Trump. It belongs to us. We’re not watching history happen. We’re making it. NO KINGS - KICK OUT THE CLOWNS.
|
On June 14th, we’re showing up everywhere he isn’t—to say no thrones, no crowns, no kings. Check out nokings.org for more information.
|
A core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.

GOP cuts to food assistance would hit rural America especially hard
Susie Boelter, executive director of the North Country Food Bank, said it’s time to expand food assistance — not cut it. She told the North Dakota Monitor her nonprofit has experienced “staggering increases” in need over the past three years.
|
|
For every meal the food bank provides across its 21-county service area in North Dakota, SNAP provides nine, she said.
|
“Any additional cuts will put a ton of pressure on our emergency food system,” Boelter said. “Food banks are good at getting food into the hands of people who need it, but it’s time to sound the alarm.”

Student: Burdick Job Corps students reportedly told they must leave campus by Wednesday
Over the weekend, North Dakota Democratic-NPL Chair Adam Goldwyn called the news of the pause of Job Corps centers nationwide “unconscionable” and called on North Dakota’s congressional delegation to step in.

Food Connection: Organic farmers facing uncertainty after funding cuts
They work with many distributors, as well as food banks and public school systems to provide local produce, but with recent funding cuts and freezes at USDA, it’s become harder to guarantee sales.
|
They say the uncertainty in the market has led to some of their farmers cutting back on this year’s crop.
|
“We are scaling back a little bit this year. There’s other factors that go into play and what not too, but when you have that uncertainty you don’t want to end up with a lot of food waste or a lot of potatoes, or whatever product you have on your hands at the end of the year.” Hugh’s Gardens owner Bjorn Solberg said.

Letter: Gov. Armstrong needs to address measles outbreak
The inept Burgum administration and the happy talk BS is gone and Governor Armstrong now has an opportunity to prioritize immunizations. There is an upcoming Dakota Conference on Rural and Public Health in Bismarck which can:
|
|
Establishing a state objective of 95% childhood measles immunization rate (needed for effective measles control) and develop plans to accomplish it
|
Call on Hoeven, Cramer and Fedorchak to demand Secretary Kennedy to restore immunization grants or recommend that he be fired!
|
For decades, North Dakota governors have ignored public health and our children are paying the price. It is past time for a governor to actually start governing. How are you going to address this tragic measles outbreak, Governor Armstrong?

Letter: North Dakota’s small hospitals rely on Medicaid reimbursement
First, at the median, Medicaid represents $3.9 million to a rural hospital’s bottom line—more than 9% of total hospital net revenue. It is inconceivable that small rural hospitals could make up for this lost revenue. Hospitals are often the largest contributor to small town economies, and hospital closures can be the death knell for small communities.

Property taxes, book bans and resolutions: Three Grand Forks lawmakers discuss recent session
Ista said he has voted against every book censorship bill, and will continue to do so every chance he gets.
|
“The issues in our state that affect our kids are not what books are displayed where in our libraries,” he said. “I love taking my kids to Grand Forks Public Library and watch them go down that big pink slide, and I’ve never once worried about what book they might stumble into.”

Minot Job Corps office to close by end of June, lone Fargo employee left without work
|
Job Corps has provided life-changing programs for young people, North Dakota Democratic Party Chair Adam Goldwyn said in a statement Sunday.
|
“It’s unconscionable to close this vital service when we are in the middle of a workforce shortage," he said. "When are Fedorchak, Hoeven, and Cramer going to stand up for us and tell Trump and Musk to keep their hands off North Dakota?”
|
North Dakota leaders have consistently said the state has a workforce shortage, Ross noted.
|
“We have been told time and time again that there are more jobs than people in North Dakota,” he said. “Getting rid of the Job Corps program is, to me, a slap in the face to all the workforce development efforts that the state of North Dakota and all of these communities are putting together.”

Staff scrambling after closure of Job Corps offices in North Dakota
“Literally learning on Friday, I’m going to lose my job sometime this week, and then learning this week that today is the day. That gives me two days to figure out my entire life and to figure out how to provide for my whole family. I don’t disagree with a couple of the events, but the way things have been carried out, the plans of action, and the lack of help for those just affected, that’s what’s really affected me,” said Bryce Young, Career Transition Specialist for Burdick Job Corps in Minot and Fargo.

We need them
What is it about Donald Trump and his followers’ hatred of international students? Why don’t they see them for what they are? Some of the brightest students in the world, choosing to continue their studies in America. They want to go to some of the most prestigious institutions in the world to get their degree, and we get the opportunity to keep them in our country.

'How has she become this?' Joe slams Sen. Ernst's 'bizarre' video on Medicaid cuts
Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, was repeatedly pressed on cuts to Medicaid in the House's budget bill at a town hall in her home state last week, and pushed back on an attendee who said the cuts would lead to deaths. Sen. Ernst doubled down on her stance over the weekend in a video posted to her social media.

GOP bill for Trump's agenda would add $2.4 trillion to the debt over 10 years, budget office says
The budget office also estimated that the package would increase the number of people without health insurance by 10.9 million by 2034 because of spending cuts and new eligibility rules under Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act.

RFK Jr. is shrinking the agency that works on mental illness and addiction
The country's main mental health agency, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, commonly known as SAMHSA, is in the process of being dissolved. It has lost more than a third of its staff of about 900 this year as part of recent reductions in the federal workforce. President Trump's budget bill cuts $1 billion from the agency's operating budget, and its mission is being folded into a new entity shaped by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

President Donald Trump appears to have finally turned on Elon Musk over his scalding criticism of the “big, beautiful bill.” At a presser, House Speaker Mike Johnson revealed that Trump told him he’s displeased with Musk, which almost certainly wouldn’t have happened unless Trump authorized it, confirming Trump’s anger at Musk is serious.

Supreme Court grants DOGE access to confidential Social Security records
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, writing for herself and Justice Sonia Sotomayor, blasted the majority for giving the DOGE team unfettered access to unredacted personal information "before the courts have time to assess whether DOGE's access is lawful." In essence, she said, the government's so-called "urgency" about gaining this access "is the mere fact that it cannot be bothered to wait for the litigation process to play out before proceeding as it wishes. “They’re Behaving Like Fascists”: Rep. Jerry Nadler Denounces DHS After Aide Is Detained, Handcuffed

Inside the Billion-Dollar Effort to Make Trump Feel Good About Himself
Trump’s demands for flattery are costing a fortune. His new administration is only a few months in, and already the total price of just three such initiatives — a flashy, Trump-flattering ad campaign from the Department of Homeland Security, a gigantic military parade in Washington, D.C., on Trump’s birthday, and the repurposing of a palatial airplane from Qatar as Trump’s new Air Force One that he can use in his post-presidency — will easily top $1 billion. And that’s just the beginning.
|
The sprawling efforts to flatter Trump are about more than serving his ego, according to Anthony DiMaggio, author of Rising Fascism in America: It Can Happen Here. “They have to do with a president who needs to be not only at the center of a media circus, but who needs to be told ritualistically over and over how great he is,” DiMaggio says. “What’s interesting to me about this, as a political scientist, is that it’s not just a personality-based thing or a defect. It’s a broader pattern that has to do with behaviors that are overlapping with authoritarian politics and ideology.”
