A ticking time bomb

The reconciliation bill moving through Congress is a ticking time bomb for rural communities. Its passage threatens the financial stability of families, farmers, and businesses across our state.

Forbes reported this bill could raise energy costs by more than $33 billion by 2035, mostly hitting working people like us. It also cuts $300 billion over the next decade from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program—a program that ensures kids are fed, no matter what. These cuts will hurt older adults, veterans, and people with disabilities in our communities. Farmers and grocers will sell less. Our state and local governments will be burdened by poor nutrition and lower health, education, and economic outcomes.

The House bill slashes federal Medicaid spending by $128 million and removes 20% of Medicaid recipients in North Dakota. Over half of North Dakotans who rely on Medicaid live in rural areas. One in two nursing home residents depends on it. This harmful policy, sold as "tough and economical," will increase medical debt, close rural hospitals and nursing homes, and reduce services while raising costs for patients and providers.

And since no one in Congress seems to do math, none of these cuts solve the debt crisis. Instead, the bill increases the debt by over $4 trillion while giving the top 0.1% of earners a $188,000 tax break—and increasing taxes on minimum-wage workers.

It also includes a pay-as-you-go clause that could cut Medicare by $188 million per year. That breaks Trump’s promise not to touch Medicare and delivers another blow to rural America.
Reach out to our congressional delegation. Oppose this bill. Don’t let rural communities get buried under higher costs, fewer services, and worse health outcomes.
