What happened today?
|
The ND House concurred with the Senate on Rep. Ben Koppleman's (R-16) bill (HB 1540) that would send your public tax dollars to private schools. So now this bill will head to the governor's desk. Private schools don’t have to accept every student, and they’re not accountable to taxpayers! This isn't great, but the bill will still have to be voted on again in the House because the Senate added some amendments.
|
|
What's coming up?
| Rep. Michelle Axtman's bill (SB 2400) which also seeks to use public funds to subsidize private schools, is headed to the House Floor tomorrow. Tell your Representative to vote no! |

North Dakota lawmakers advance private school voucher bill
|
Rep. Liz Conmy, D-Fargo, voted against the bill and told lawmakers the North Dakota Constitution prohibits the use of public school tax dollars to support a sectarian school.
|
“We are obligated, constitutionally, to fund and strengthen public schools and specifically directed to not subsidize private education,” Conmy said. “We don’t get to pick and choose what part of the constitution we want to go with or not.”

Letter: Protect our libraries and veto SB 2307
This bill threatens to take control away from local communities and parents, criminalize librarians and teachers, and block access to essential digital resources like Libby and Hoopla. Libraries already have processes in place to manage their collections, and laws are already in place to keep illegal materials out of libraries. SB 2307 adds nothing but confusion, fear, and at least $2 million in new costs for redundant internet filters.

A WAR Is Brewing Between Trump and SCOTUS! (W/ Bill Kristol)
Republican senators could have insisted on someone who was even minimally competent to run our military, but because of their spinelessness, we've now got a SecDef who can't resist texting top secret war plans. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court shows it doesn't trust the Trump administration, and judges on lower federal courts have stopped believing what its lawyers say. And the uncanny relevance of the American revolutionaries' grievances against King George.

Jerome Powell Is the Next Trump Crisis
The reactionary Supreme Court is itching to overturn Humphrey’s Executor. It signaled it will do just that earlier this month when Justice John Roberts stayed an appeals court’s reinstatement of Gwynne Wilcox, a Democratic member of the NLRB, pending review by the high court. Roberts may as well have said, “Why bother putting her back in when we’re just going to kick her out later?”

House Republicans eye date for fight over food assistance program
This target date, while weeks away, is still an ambitious timeline as Republicans are trying to resolve the massive gap between the House’s instruction for the committee to accomplish $230 billion in spending cuts as compared with the Senate Agriculture Committee’s $1 billion minimum goal to offset the massive package of tax cuts, beefed up border security, energy policy and more.
